Not been following this story much... anyone able to quickly brief me what its about?

This is from a BBC article:

The 46-year-old former MSP was found guilty of lying during his successful defamation case against the News of the World newspaper in 2006.

He sued after it printed allegations that he was an adulterer who had attended a swingers' club

This is the whole article

I can't help but feel a little saddened.

Slightly OT but related....

Do we think that the private sex lives of public figures (providing that it hurts no one involved and is consentual) should hold the power to be their downfall ?

After all isn't that at the root of the T Sheridan case. As I see it he dug himself into a hole to avoid the sex allegations facing him.

I ask as I personally think his biggest crime (initially) is having gone to the club without (as far as I know) the knowledge of Gail, which must have been hurtful to her.

But.... had he said 'yes, it's true... sorry Gail.' would the public at large forgive him his being human, or would it have ruined him ?

I'm guessing it would be the end of his career, I just wonder are we more concerned with the private sex lives of others than we should be ? aren't there bigger issues (regarding politicians) that are overlooked and/or forgiven more freely like (for example) war crimes, misuse of public spending etc.

Just wondering (not specific to this case) if the priorities of the public are a little askew ?
Comrade Ogilvy
He lied in court though and was therefore guilty of perjury..
Its not the same as your everyday liES.
He should have just held his hands up in the first place and said "so what"
He wanted a whole political movement to lie for him  and put them in an unwinnable situation just to save his own hide.
I've no sympathy for him and think he is an arrogant tosspot.

I have followed the trial closely and sorry at the result, I firmly beleive Tommy was stitched up. I watched the BBC programme last night (dont know if it was shown nationwide) There is no doubt that most of his "friends" were on the NOTW payroll. Wasnt the jury 7/5 ?    Gail will stand by her man, thats for sure

I didn't want to pre judge but now it's over..... He should have noted the watershed Gillian Taylforth (I think ) case. If she'd just put her hands up, as it were, to giving her partner a gam, then it would have been over quicker than a Wayne Rooney story. Whilst the public regard him as a hero on the fight against the forces of evil he would get away with his visits to Swingers Clubs, whatever they are.

Thanks for the link SB.

Sheridan quoted the sentences given to other high profile perjurers - former Conservative MPs Jonathan Aitken and Lord Archer.

He said Aitken had been jailed for 18 months while Archer had received four years for two charges of perjury and for perverting the course of justice.

This was compared to Sheridan's own conviction on one charge of perjury, which contained five allegations.

Tommy`s made a valid argument for a lesser sentence. I hope he succeeds.
