Yeah we used to do it sitting to close to the fire on the cracket using a long toasting fork but you still got too near and nearly burnt your face off. Elf and safety would have a ball now

I have a sandwich bar near me that does a "full monty" bap which is sausage, bacon, and egg.
I have expanded it somewhat.
They now do me a special one which contains:
sausage, egg, bacon, mushrooms, stuffing, marmite, and vinegar.
It is sublime.

toast need real butter not marg, i don't think I've ever tried it off a coal fire... well maybe before i was 6 but i have really rubbish memory

I've never tried it with lime marmalade - but often have peanut butter with regular orange marmalade. My initial thought was ewww too - until I tried it.
oh and my great gran used to have a toasting fork that hung beside her fireplace - toast does taste better that way. I have vague recollections of using a dinner fork too... that got a bit hot....
