For anyone who is required to file self assessment tax retunrs and hasn't filed them yet or only recently.

In previous years HMRC has sent out reminders with a blank payslip. It's been confirmed that they aren't doing that this year which is why you haven't had one. They are emailing people with a reminder but of course can only do that where they have your email address.

You are still required to file the return and pay the tax by 31 Janaury.

Paying by post - complete and use the payslip on this though you have to post it in plenty of time

There is a risk that fraudsters will send emails to people which pretend to be reminders but with either attachments or links to forged sites.

Don't open attachments and be careful with clicking on links included in the emails.

Genuine HMRC emails won't include any requests for personal or financial information.

They've issued guidance on this and other examples of phishing emails.
