Erm: was watching the Horizon special on him tonight, and apparently two of the ISS supply rockets this year failed...

Although Tim Peake is the first official British astronaut, Helen Sharman was the first Briton in space back in 1991 when she went to the Mir space station.

I find it all rather pointless

The International Space Station is apparently the most expensive man made object ever built - costing billions to make. God knows how much to run/maintain.

Is it money well spent? What real use is it? What have we discovered anything of real importance from being in space?

So far, so good and a successful launch

I think it's quite amazing to watch all the sections separating.

Back at 7 pm now for the docking.

It's difficult to really take in that in just these few minutes they are now in orbit, in space, above the Earth's atmosphere!

Live streaming of the docking with the space station - scheduled for 17.24

Due to the space station being out of range at present, the video feed is poor so not good picture quality.

Docking has been successful. A bit dodgy as it had to be done manually, and video feed out so audio only.

I guess off the top of my head, the experiments they can conduct in space may prove useful over time back here on terra firma.

Also the technology used to get into and stay in space should trickle down to us all over time.

No, on the contrary, I watched a programme about how no gravity helps some experiments. I was quoting what I have hear and read but without all the technical detail.

I makes me wonder how far microchip development would be if we had not gone to space in the first place. One would guess that everything in a spaceship is optimised to the nth degree.

Would we still be walking around with 1980's mobiles phones? Who knows.
