Why does a toaster that can only take sliced bread have about 6 settings?
What are they?
1. Not done.
2. Nearly done.
3. Done properly.
4. Burnt.
5. Charcoal.
6. Fire Brigade.

the highest setting is for toasting crumpets, nothing worse than an anaemic crumpet

That's pretty accurate Saint, there's a 'Keep Warm' button and a 'Toast from frozen' button too. 
The thickness, freshness and temperature of the bread playes a part too, as does the type. (Brown, white, fruited, English crumpets, Scottish pancakes, etc.)
