It reminded me of what happened in the States back in 1938 when there was a radio broadcast of The War of the Worlds, directed and narrated by Orson Welles before he went into films. It produced mass panic amongst people who thought this was a real news story and that the Martians had landed. There is no reliable evidence as to how many people thought it was real, but it was suggested that it could have been as many as 1.7 million.
People are nuts!
(who am I kidding, I was just looking for an excuse to use me BA Facepalm )

But that was specifically directed to sound like a live on location radio broadcast punctuating a radio show. The claimed mass public hysteria was said to be more down to sensationalism in the media (hmm, nothing much changes) in the days when it was seriously speculated that there were huge canals on Mars and that Mars could and did sustain some hardy plant life.

That's how the story was written, How else were they supposed to dramatise it?

I might call up the Whitehouse, say I've just watched Independence Day and ask if there's really a massive feck off alien UFO hovering over it.
