I'm thinking and thinking some more ooooh I might just have got the first one!! will probably spend the rest of the day working out the others

I got the others straight away... I'm so switched on you see. But I blame my lack of knowledge of American 'stuff' as the reason why I can't get 8.

just to complicate it - it's not American  but was popular there ! ( and set there )

FWIW (don't think this is too big a clue):

5 is French; 4 & 8 are Belgian (at least originally). All the rest are American.
