Regular self-checks are one of the most important things i have heard. Not much else to say being male but hope it helps

I wasn't trying/meaning to sound unsympathetic Sprout - apologies if my post came across that way.
Just that people moan about being nagged about their lifestyle but would probably also complain if they found out that the govt knew x,y or z caused cancer and hadn't told them

Yep, male or female. it doesn't matter if it catches something early and the outcome is the better for it

Not a prob Veggie I'm just trying to get peeps to be aware of things. It can only be for the good
Of course they should tell us all the risk factors.
If we can cut down on our norty lifestyle choices, and want to, then that's no bad thing.
Remember, though, worrying is bad for your health!

It's a personal belief but I think there are several factors as to why the body becomes diseased whether breast cancer or any other disease and it's not always related to what's eaten, what size or alcohol related.
Not specifically related to what I've just said but I have a dear friend of many years who has had breast cancer for 4 years. She made the decision not have chemo etc, she's been living life to the full with her hubby, working, travelling and says it's been the best 4 years of her life, my hopes for her are long may she be as well as she is. I know others who've had breast cancer, taken the treatment of chemo and have come through to be declared as free of it so they too are living life to the full. There seem to be so many variables that there's no hard and fast evidence about anything.

Most people I know who have had cancer apart from my grandad their cancer was genetic. Whole families it was in their Genes and yes there was a test to prove it but there is the Radon factor aswell, old cottages here do not have a Radon barriers and Radons are a big cause of cancer..also you can't tell me that filling your body with the chemicals that are in processed food and drink can't cause cancer aswell and its been proven that multiple sexual partners can cause cancer of the cervix....so you are what you eat and sleep in the end....

Yeah. you're right YR., especially about variables. My dad was fine after a lung cancer op,( twenty odd year ago, I admit) and we all agreed that he should have chemo as we all thought it was what was best for him at the time. He went rapidly down hill though after it and eventually died. doesn't mean to say that this will happen to everyone though

Also my brother (Phil) had a scare also about 5 years ago with bowel cancer (He's still being monitored, yes, he drinks a little...doesn't smoke and generally looks after himself, although like me a bit overweight. Does that pre-determine that he will get it? Is it in the genes I guess, Is what I'm asking?

If the doctors see that there is a sweep of cancer in a family eg; mother daughter, son etc they normally offer a cancer screen cos the gene will show up, my friend knew this was in the family and was offered this but would'nt take it because she was scared of the answer....
Alas Sprout, lung cancer has in the main a poor diagnosis.Yes some folk can survive it,even after having some of the lung removed, however it will depend on the type of cancer and lifestyle of the patient.Your lungs literally are your breathing life.

.Had a camera etc up there and a sample taken, some womb polyps had "calcified " a possible danger sign. However samples taken ,turned out benign. All this in the stirrups etc with me saying blithely saying "Carry on".I'm not shy..
I've to have tests done under general anaesthetic Katty....My doc arranged an urgent appointment with a gynaecologist last month, saw him who wanted these tests done asap,I've my pre-assessment on Feb 17th and surgery scheduled for the 26th,a darn Saturday of all days.Reference:
Does anyone know if pain in the breast means anything? it's not a serious pain just uncoftamble (sp) when lying down
Aims try not to worry mate, it could be a hormonal thing. Pain like that can develop as our bodies change and our hormones can change with age.
Go to your GP and get an appt with the hospital breast clinic, they should be able to get you an appointment pretty quickly (within a couple of weeks). A mammogram and/or scan will be able to put your mind at rest.
Evening Primrose oil capsules are supposed to be good for breast pain, but they take a couple of months to kick in. x
Lee,hope everything goes okay for you...I was not knocked out, though he did state some women wanted it done under a "General". I just thought well I'm getting one procedure,,might as well do another while you're there.A little bit ouchy but not too bad.,Quicker results etc.

I'll be fine Katty,I'm more peed off having it done on a Saturday tbh, being a superstitious mare that is....I've had smears and biopsy's done before, not a problem ,the last few times they tried to do a smear I near came off the table, any road they're doing a few tests while they have me knocked out.

I think there is something in it. Breast cancer is so prevalent in this country, and we are much worse at looking after ourselves than our some of our foreign counterparts who tend to do much better. We drink far too much, eat a load of manufactured crap full of god knows what and are not the best for keeping up our fitness.
I am only 34 and have been for 3 breast scans and one mammogram for lumps and bumps in my time. The result of this is that i know a fair amount of info about breasts and self examination. I examine myself religiously and cant understand how any young woman could sleep soundly at night without doing so.
Aimee, the last time i went for my mammogram i had pain as well as some lumpy bit. It would wake me at night with a searing pain like a hot needle through my boob. When i asked the consultant at the breast clinic what can i do about the pain he just smiled and said get pregnant, that will help. I said....nah ill keep the pain
I dont mean to make light of it but i do think that pain is fairly normal, he didnt even seem to take much notice of the 'pain' symptom. So you must get it checked but try really hard not to worry too much about it, sometimes you might feel the pain more, a lot of it can be because you are so so aware of it.
I would look for any lumps or changes, changes in shape and size, nipple change, skin changes, especially orange peal like effects, or bruising that doesnt go away. Dimpling or pulling of the breast. Look for dimpling when you tense the muscles underneath.

Tjanks Gyps, i will be going to see the doctor this week, i've checked and theres no lumps or discharge and no other changes, like you say i think it's more too do with being aware of it that you notice it more, it does seem worse just before starting, it's not a seering pain just more of a dull ache like you've bumped yourself
