The 'wedding' is making huge amounts of money for GB, all those flags etc have to be made and sold by someone, massive tourist puller as well,  hotels (I'd say) will be jammers.

I also think people forget what a great country you HAVE. Think of the education that you have, 100 years ago you wouldn't have had it. The NHS again luckily if you become ill you can get help. Freedom of speech, you can discuss the flaws in your country without fear.

Woods...trees.

Just saying.

if it's anything like the Olympics those flags are being made by the French

I'll be in work on the day and it will be on telly so there won't be any escape. but I hope Camilla gets pissed and embarrassing at the reception and I hope Wills can't get it up on the night.

Bollox to all of it.

The Camilla bit'd be funny but poor Kate ...  she's got to get something out of it. Mind you she's so skinny these days too much chafing and she might catch fire.

I'm wondering whether my mindset is that different tbh ... I'm Welsh not English and I don't think of being Welsh and British as the same thing. To me British is more English than Welsh or Scottish. In an way that makes me far more removed from the shenanigans about this wedding than yer average Englander IMO. And before you start mentioning the Prince of Wales can I just say puuurlease...it's all Edward I hogwash.

Naturally we have a kick arse patron saint  aside from the fact it's all christian idiocy of course...

LOL Cariad - I would not dream of insulting you by mentioning the Prince of Wales.

At least your patron Saint existed - there is a query as to whether ours even did

It's a harmless bit of a break from the depressing state our country is in due to our over payed and under worked MP's have gotton us into.

Give me the royals over a boring faceless republic anyday.

I agree with your very last paragraph. However I'm not sure about the Union Flag being our national flag. I don't think that we have ever been comfortable with flags. Sure! They get waved around a lot at Football and harmless events, but we don't seem to have a culture of flying 'em like they do in Europe! Obviously if the people at one edge of Nick Clegg's plural society start misusing them , then they become racist flags, and the people of this country are too apathetic to take them back. I can't sleep. I have an ear infection.

Yeah, branding everything with the stupid union flag went out with the Spice Girls.  It's just aesthetically tacky, duff, a bit of a tired old design that reminds me of the Austin Powers, Twiggy, minis, The Spice Girls and Britpop.  As a flag it's representative of a union of nations that no longer want to be in that union.  These days, the English, Welsh, Scots prefer to fly their own nation's flags.

Racist?  It has been used in that way, certainly, but I don't regard it as a racist statement.

Like I said above, I'm not patriotic for the reasons I mentioned in a reply to Issy, above.

As for a 'boring republic', what's so exciting about the royals?  They're just another facet of celeb culture and completely arrogant and unaccountable to the state.  So much so, that they can snub our ex PMs while inviting aristocracy who murder their own people.

Apparently Maggie has declined her invite and John Major is invited in his capacity as both William & Harry's guardian (at the time of their mother's death).  He's not there in his capacity as an ex PM.

Sorry Cosmopolitan, Thatcher and Major are there for the reason the palace has already mentioned.  And let's be honest - John Major being William and Harry's guardian is just pathetic royalist establishment bullshit - a title for title's sake. What can John Major do to be their guardian?  It's utterly farcical, yet such rank stupidity is never questioned nor ever justified.

It's clear that our awful royal family have a distaste for Labour.  The voters put Labour into office three times and our arrogant, obnoxious, freeloading royal family have taken it upon themselves to snub two former democratically elected leaders of this country.

I shouldn't matter what relationship they have with each individual PM, what should matter is that they should behave appropriately and respectfully towards ex-PMs.  What they shouldn't do is snub former PMs on clearly fabricated ettiquette and invite Monarchs who are killing their own people.  If Ed Miliband had more guts, he'd boycott the Royal Wedding.

It's not like they have a limited budget or have to worry about having enough cheese on sticks to go round.

Selective etiquette and no doubt with its own agenda. I can't see them putting a load of names into a hat and doing a lucky dip at Balmoral.

Not read all this thread just the last couple of pages but am confused.. .people  banging on about who the Royals have or have not invited to the wedding. . I thought with 'State' type occasions like this the Government did the majority of the guest lists.. The Royals don't really get a say in it do they apart from a small portion of the guest list. .ie their family and friends?

I may be wrong tho. .usually am

I think, and I may be wrong, that as Prince William is not Heir Apparent, it is not such a State Occasion as the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana.

I wonder if they will have cheese and pineapple hedgehogs at the reception?

yeah I know that's why I put state in inverted comma's. .tis a bank holiday tho so 'speshal' in some ways..

Still think the Government do the bulk of the guest list tho for these types of occasions.. . . hope everybody enjoys their day off, if they get one, whether or not they are into weddings or not..

Surely a candidate for pointless non-story of the year?

http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/w0012005.html

Elton gushes about how 'proud Diana would be of Kate'.  He should get over himself!  All he did was rewrite the lyrics to the already awful "Candle in the Wind".

The idle musings of an attention seeking old queen about Saint Diana seems to be classed as news.  What else would he say?  "Diana would have really hated Kate", I don't think so, somehow!

Good old Elton! I hope he gets a good view and he doesn't get stuck behind a pillar or a mahoosive hat.

Can't stand Elton John.....ha ha, that made me chuckle....

The Devil In Diamante

There was nothing I wanted to watch while I waited for Masterchef tonight.     I started watching a William and Kate thing on C5.     I got drawn in... I'm looking forward to Friday.       I have to say, seeing them being interviewed and seeing Charles and Di being interviewed was like night and day and it made me quite hopeful for them.    They really do seem relaxed and comfortable with each other.

I think I'm getting soft in my old age.
