You seem to have completely missed the original point. No issue with the wedding at all - just all the never ending media hype and crap surrounding it. We are not "all" excited about the event. It's mildly interesting but not a reason for overarching ecstasy...and that has nothing to do with patriotism.
...my family and friends are very old fashioned, patriotic, Royal loving Brits and we are ALL looking forward to it.  It's just the odd person or two that I know at work that has a real downer on it, and a couple of my snotty nosed neighbours who are refusing to join in with all the celebrations.  Grumpy old gits!

Sounds like hell on earth.

Have to say, speaking from experience, that the 'Royal bashers' are always the same kind of people IMO: very left-wing, (No) and totally 'anti-establishment,' (not TOTALLY) and they hate ANYthing to do with the Royal family, (I'm a republican but I don't hate the Windsors, just find them rather pointless)  and they can't do right for doing wrong in their eyes....  They are often the feminist 'grow your own food' (goodness can't be arsed with all that, thank goodness for Aldi) and 'cook-from-scratch' type, (well I try but occasionally I give up and feed the kids pizza) who treat anyone that owns a microwave and gives their kids more than three mcdonalds a year, as appalling parents, (I'm an appalling parent ...) and think people are thick scum if they read the Sun Newspaper...(**dithers** )

They also hate Valentines and often anything romantic or 'soft,' and think that anyone who has an engagement ring that cost more than fifty quid is 'materislistic' and probably has no soul.....  And they also hate Christmas.... They refuse to buy anything for anyone for Christmas, because it's 'too commercialised,' (not thinking that you can still buy for people without spending a lot...!!! )  it just makes them feel 'cool' by saying Christmas is shit.  It's so anti-establishment you see, to hate Christmas, just like hating the Royal family is! Nope...not the same at all .. and that's speaking as an aetheist.

They also insist that the new millenium began at the start of 2001, JUST to go against the grain and the masses,(well technically it did but that didn't stop me having a ball on 31/12/99) and they hate celebrity magazines,(loathe them)  and mainstream celebrities, and think people who read or look at those type if mags are brainless scum and chavs. (I think there are better things to read, like cereal packets if you're pushed)  They would never admit to liking lady gaga or s club 7 or the A list Hollywood stars, only Joni Mitchell and Lou Reed, and French actors nobody has heard of, from obscure movies from the 1980s.... Also, they hate really funny modern-day comedians and say they are shit, and claim that old fashioned 1950s 'comedy' like Peter Cook and Spike Milligan is 'real' comedy. (You're on a complete roll with the over  generalisations now aren't you?) They would NEVER shop in regular high street stores...and only go to farm shops and tiny little independent shops for their clothes and household goods.... (I wish I had the money to afford that ...tis Aldi and Peacocks here) And say people who DO shop in regular high street stores are brainless drones.....  And I re-iterate; they detest and pour scorn over anyone who doesn't follow their beliefs.  Sound like some people you may know/know of  I certainly know a few people like this... Thinking they are cool and 'hip' by being so anti-establishment and slagging off the Royals!

Bottom line hon is that you seem to have far more of a chip on your shoulder than the people you slate. I hope you have a lovely day next Friday - really I do. As I've said before I have no problem with the wedding ... or with anyone wanting to get into the whole vibe. I just object to the constant media hype and the assumption we are all wetting ourselves with excitement about it. I do not accept that patriotism is linked to a love of Windsors but then I'm Welsh.

i despise the royals and am nothing like that!!!....it's my nephews 18th next friday...i'm more excited about that.......

SS

I couldn't care less about the royals one way or the other. They're just 'there'. But this wedding crap is just immeasurably boring as far as I'm concerned. You don't have to hate the royals to find the idea of the wedding a HUGE bore just as you don't have to love them to be interested in the wedding.

Street parties and flag waving and celebrating all things English is for when England play in the world cup and the Euros but hey that's just me...

I don't have a problem with the royal family at all, and don't particularly like or dislike any of them, apart from Diana who I loathed with a passion.  But I am still sick to death of the hype about this wedding, and can't think of anything that would make me consider watching it, any more than I watched Charles and Diana's wedding.  I will be spending next Friday working.

Good post ..........................why does it matter if people want to watch the wedding or they don't? Does it really matter? Is it worth getting all worked up over?

There will be those that watch and enjoy iy it - and those that won't watch it. Simple as that. Why get worked up over it?

I think as far as this forum is concerned it does.

I did all the bunting and celebration the first time round with Charles and Diana. I too hate all the tackiness associated with the wedding but on the other hand ( and I know I will get jumped upon for saying this) it may well boast the economy with all of the merchandise and increase in tourism.

There seems to be a general trend everywhere to knock the "established". People who are religious are "deluded", the Royal family are "bleeding the tax payer dry". Public sector workers are "lazy and wasting our money".

Well at least in this great country of ours we have the freedom to say all this. How many other countries can say the same?

I hope the sun shines for them. I hope everyone who has a street party has a good time and I would far rather my taxes went on something like this than a war that nobody seems to want.

*packs up soapbox and wanders off*

I don't know if it is a question of being miserable Cagney - its just not wanting the same things.. which is absolutely fine BUT all of us should be allowed to express that as long as we don't mock others for wanting it.. does that make sense?

I don't know why people go on about the media so much. If it's in your newspaper...turn the page. If it's on telly...choose another channel. If it's in the shops it's not gonna jump off the shelf into your trolley and make you buy it.

I just hope that all the people I've heard over the last few weeks (not only on here) moaning about it are gonna volunteer to work that day so that their colleagues who do want to watch it can have the day off

LOL well said Cagney and Suzybean.  I am sick and tired of people whingeing about the Royal wedding and bitching about the Royal family.  Don't bloody watch the wedding if you don't want to... it's as simple as that.  Plenty of people want to....As someone said, many people have not seen a wedding like this before, and it makes them proud and patrotic... Why are they proud?  What's to be pround of, two wealthy people getting married.  Are you proud of Katie Price, when she get's married? There always has to be a few Royal bashers though.... There aren't that many in my life though, as my family and friends are very old fashioned, patriotic, What's patriotic about supporting feudalism and opposing greater democratic accountablity? Royal loving Brits and we are ALL looking forward to it. I wish you lot would fund it yourselves!  It's just the odd person or two that I know at work that has a real downer on it, and a couple of my snotty nosed neighbours who are refusing to join in with all the celebrations.  Grumpy old gits!

(THEIR opinion of course, and not a fact.)  Have to say, speaking from experience, that the 'Royal bashers' are always the same kind of people IMO: very left-wing, Rupert Murdoch is a republican, he's not left wing.  There's a side to right wing thinking that says that there's no such thing as a free lunch, the royals are on the fattest free lunch going  and totally 'anti-establishment,' Well they would be, as the monarchy heads the establishment  and they hate ANYthing to do with the Royal family, and they can't do right for doing wrong in their eyes.... That's because they hardly do anything right

From this point you just go on to throw every Daily Mail hack inspired stereotype in the book into the mix to create 'type' you imagine anti-monarchists to be - so you can hate them more.  I'll take your stereotypes and reverse them so you can see how ridiculous you sound.

They are often the feminist 'grow your own food'  and 'cook-from-scratch' type, who treat anyone that owns a microwave and gives their kids more than three mcdonalds a year, as appalling parents, and think people are thick scum if they read the Sun Newspaper...

Royalists are often sexists who live on TV dinners, they instinctively distrust those who they see as do-gooders and are the types who bring chips to schools so their kids don't have to eat any broccoli.  They see anyone who doesn't like the Sun as pretentious and snooty.

[Sorry, the valentine's comment is just too stupid to parody].  They love the commercialisation of Christmas and getting pissed, but they also love to moan about councils that don't send Christian themed cards, because they 'don't know the true Christian meaning of Xmas'.

They also insist that the new millenium began at the start of 2001, JUST to go against the grain and the masses, and they hate celebrity magazines, and mainstream celebrities, and think people who read or look at those type if mags are brainless scum and chavs.

Again, too absurd to parody.  I think you'll find the fiercely royalist Horse and Hound set and blue rinse Tory types hate celebrity magazines and would be the first to describe the people who read those magazines as brainless scum and chavs.

They would never admit to liking lady gaga or s club 7 Yeah, that's because they probably aren't under 12 years old!  . or the A list Hollywood stars, only Joni Mitchell and Lou Reed, and French actors nobody has heard of, from obscure movies from the 1980s.... Also, they hate really funny modern-day comedians and say they are shit, and claim that old fashioned 1950s 'comedy' like Peter Cook and Spike Milligan is 'real' comedy.

Peter Cook and Spike Milligan are like chalk and cheese - Prince Charles is a big Goon Show fan, so where does that leave him?  Peter Cook was a satirist most active in the 1960s, but also through to the 1980s and very popular with the early 80s alternative comedians.  "Derek and Clive Get The Horn" with Dudley Moore, (70s early 80s) is full of expletives and was banned on TV.  In that respect, it was well ahead of its time.  If you think Peter Cook is a 1950s comedian, you really don't have a clue who he was.

Who are these really funny modern day comedians?

They would NEVER shop in regular high street stores...and only go to farm shops and tiny little independent shops for their clothes and household goods.... And say people who DO shop in regular high street stores are brainless drones.....

Yeah, that's a tired old Daily Mail stereotype of the predominantly middle class urban left wing.  I think you'll find there's plenty of people in the working class who oppose the monarchy.

And I re-iterate; they detest and pour scorn over anyone who doesn't follow their beliefs.  Sound like some people you may know/know of?    I certainly know a few people like this... Thinking they are cool and 'hip' by being so anti-establishment and slagging off the Royals!

Your five or so paragraphs clearly show that you detest and scorn anyone who doesn't support the monarchy.  You apply generalist stereotypes you've read in the Daily Mail, so it's easier for you to hate them.  Look up circular reasoning.

I lived through her policies cupcake, she was a dreadful PM - nasty and vindictive to whole swathes of this country's population.

You didn't hit any nerves, you just showed yourself up for being a bit of a, how can I put this?  "Sun" or "Daily Mail" reader type with a lot of silly, ill-informed received prejudices and assumptions.  Do you still insist that Peter Cook is a 1950s comedian?  BTW, who are these really funny modern-day comedians - Jim Davidson, perhaps?

Plenty of people lived through Thatcher, just like we have all lived through other PMs and they all have good and bad points, but to say you will be glad when someone is dead is just bang out of order, ... But like I said, this is a typical (and very tired and predictable) comment from a left-wing anti-establishment ranter who thinks it 'cool' to make comments like this...

And as for your comments in your post I have highlighted about how I 'come across to you...' or how I have supposedly 'showed myself;'  all I will say is 'pot kettle black,' because you know nothing whatsover about me but have drawn all *your* conclusions.   And the accusations about me appearing to be a 'daily mail reader' made me laugh so hard that I almost peed myself.  That is SUCH a totally predictable comment from very left wing people on message forums, and it always makes me laugh....

And yes, it is actually confirmed that I did come close to the bone and hit a few raw nerves; especially with you.    Good day, and have a nice Easter break   I think we must agree to differ, because the argument/debate will go nowhere as I am not going to change my views and neither will anyone else.  Plus I have to go now and don't have the time to carry on 'debating..'

Re Anitope's comments above me here..  I shan't even grace them with a response, because they are ALWAYS negative towards everything I say; and I know exactly why.    Bye bye.. I am going now.   Got packing to do.

But I am anti-establishment and left wing.  Always question the motives and interests of the 'great and the good'.   They get away with taking enough liberties as it is, without everyone just burying their heads in the sand and letting them get on with fleecing us.

I don't wish Thatcher dead, it's not like I want to kill her, it's just a case of 'good riddance to bad rubbish'.  However, IMO, her class war-faring government ruined enough people's lives and aspirations to justify raising a glass or two upon her demise.

Carnelian

thanks Tooth Fairy   Although I do expect negative comments with the kind of things I sometimes put.  LOL!     I do get more positive and nice posts though.,  probably 5 nice to 1 negative or 'pissed off' posts!  so it's OK    But the ones that just post to bash me without anything else to say, (like 'anitope' for one, are a drag...)    Best ignored, so that's why I decided to ignore him/her, especially as I know WHY they are doing it LOL.
