Will they also be asking Obama to pay for his B&B?

SazBomb I am sure poll tax applies more or less the same wherever you live  as it is banded the bigger your house and how much it is worth the more you pay ..I could be wrong but I dont think I am

Margy    That's what confused me.. i thought it related to the value of your house too, but I'm pretty sure my house would cost a good few times more in London than it does it here.   Oh, but then again I suppose it would still be a 'cheap' flat by London standards.. so it's all relative then.

Kaffy if my house was in London it would treble in value as said above it is a very expensive place to live ..I love London

that's the funny thing, he never mentioned Obama....we're very selective aren't we.

As for the London bashing...I absolutely LOVE London...would live there in a heartbeat if I could for the transport system alone!

I made a huge post and a new thread this morning that got lost when the forum went down about why all the talk about the royals only benefiting London being a load of bollocks. Of the top 10 tourist attractions in this country although 8 are in London, only two are in any way related to the Roual family albeit tenuously (the V&A and the Tower of London) Folk with a chip on their shoulder regarding London need to get over it.

I am happy for Kate and William, and I am happy that if people want to get involved then they have welcomed them to do so.If people do not want to get involved then that is their choice. We actually do have a choice in the British Isles, where, in many parts of the world people are forced in to putting a show on for the rest of the world and have to force their jollity.

Personally I will be going to a lovely, friendly pub with my sister and niece, where the landlord is putting a buffet on all day, and we will be watching on the big screen from 10.30  in the morning. ( I won't be partaking of the alcohol until the sun is well over the yard arm) We will be wearing fascinators and generally having a very jolly time. I hope whatever people choose to do, that everyone has a really good day. And, I only wish William and Kate all the happiness they deserve.

Well.. a great part of the British public are hoping it rains  on them, so he might get his wish.   (i'm not one of them btw..). I'm getting quite into the spirit of it now and know I'll be watching from breakfast time till balcony wave (with breaks for tea and bacon sarnies)

that surprised me, Karms - mine is ÂĢ100 in a smallish town, wee ex council flat... my niece lives about 9 miles away, nowhere special, not a city, in an older style tenement flat... and hers is ÂĢ125!      You're rents much more expensivethan hers though (double) and I can afford to buy at least.    I know the cost of living is higher down there, but it doesn't sound like the council's milking the population any more than they are anywhere else.   I is confused.....

We have a shi88y Lib Dem council and under them my council tax has risen to ÂĢ220 per month, then factor in a season ticket costing ÂĢ3,000 and we are being milked right, left and centre.....it is much cheaper on the whole to eat out here and food prices are much the same as in the north. We all suffer from prohibitive energy and fuel bills and housing is sometimes treble the cost

There's a positive side to it then. It rains....he gets his wish

Have an indoor picnic like we are having. Living room table will be full of food by 10am and we'll sit in our jammies munching and watching till it's finished

I think I'm getting excited too because it's William. The little Royal my generation has watched grow up. "my Royal" is what I said to the kids. His children will be "their Royal".

Kaffers......they were forced to freeze it this year and the services here are rubbish. They spent a bloody fortune on a ridiculous fountain...that never works

I wouldn't say I was excited about it, but it'll be a good show. That's true about William...we have seen him grow up and he's turned out well considering the family he's part of

35k is not an average for everybody, though? You'd have to be at a certain level or have a good CV with years of experience to get that. Trainees will be lucky to get 25k let alone 35k and that's only if they work in central London, where you can usually deduct at least a thousand off that salary for travel expenses let alone costs of living.

Trainees or careers outside inner London do pay significantly less. And it all averages out the same anyway. If you want to work in inner London for more money but stay far enough away because it's cheaper to rent and council tax is lower, you'll pay extortionate amounts just to commute. If you want to live in London, you'll pay less travel but your rent and council tax will increase. It really isn't as 'good' as you think.

What I don't understand is that these days London is filled with so many people who are not Londoners. If they hate it so much why bother? Obviously Mr.Meat n Veg will never be residing in a London postcode (just my observation), but I've worked with loads of Northern peoples over the years. (Or forrin people - anyone from outside the M25)

Oh... can't you just do that to Eamon Holmes anyway?

I've not actually seen much about it... i watched a bit of a programme last night while I was waiting for Masterchef, and I watched a bit about them rehearsing on the news this morning and that's it.    I'm saving myself for wedding overload on Friday....   I may need a new hat though...

I've always thought the tourist argument for the royal family had holes in it.  People go to New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Rome without concerning themselves for royal palaces.  People will still want to see nice buildings.  They even want to see Downing Street, and that's just a boring terrace.

There are several arguements for the royals

- Tradition - slavery was a 'tradition'

- None partisan - that has to be questioned after their frequent comments about their pet passions like fox hunting and now the royals have excluded two ex-Labour PMs on totally spurious grounds

- Stability - France, the US and Italy are all stable without the need for a monarch.  The Iraq war IMO exposed the ambiguity of the queen where she can be Commander in Chief of Her Majesty's Armed Forces, yet Tony Blair is the one who's described as a war criminal and should face trial.  So either the title is meaningless or the Queen could indeed by tried as a war criminal!

- Tourism - the last defence of monarchists.  It's said by monarchists that even if all the other republican arguments are valid, the royals are economically useful to the country and should be maintained. The gist of the argument is that the royals make London 'special' and without them it would be a nondescript dull city, like any other.  The point is that argument can never really be applied to Birmingham, Liverpool, Southampton etc special, they just make London special, they just draw tourists into London.
