Happy Thinking Day everyone. Today 22nd Feb is the joint birthday of Lord and Lady Baden Powell who were the founders of Scouts & Guides 100 yrs ago. What started with a small group of boys testing out BP methods is now worldwide with millions of members.
Guides are celebrating their Centenary this year in the UK. I'm proud to say I'm a Leader in this great organisaton.
Maybe you were a Scout or a Brownie/Guide and have some memories you could post here.

Only a few weeks though-- uniforms were an added expense in them days

The Brownies 'suggested' to my mum that it might not be the thing for me.

It's my daughter's birthday, though, so I'll celebrate that!

I wasn't let in to the Brownies. Said I didn't quite meet the criteria. All cos I was on a BMX and covered in mud from doing ramps at the park when I tried to join. Twonks. I would have made them proud I'm sure

I went to brownies and loved it but when it was time to leave and move up to guides it just wasnt the "cool" thing to do

I now help out at Rainbows which, for those who dont know (cos I didnt - they didnt have them when i was that age!!), is part of the Guide Association for girls age 5-7 - pre-brownies

Was a brownie and a Girl Guide. We were allowed to wear the uniform to school on thinking day, and the bus driver wouldn't take the fare. Times change though eh?

We still wear the uniform to school/work on Thinking Day Tiddly. The younger girls love showing it off.
He was a bit, erm, odd Daniel J but his ideas are still going and thriving 100 yrs later.

I got through cubs and scouts without incident, despite Baden Powell's legacy of repressed same-sex attraction held in place by cold showers and lots of outdoor activities. I then joined the ATC and managed to do something mildly rooode with a sergeant in a tent in RAF Brize Norton.

Hi, my name is Cariad and I am a Guide/Scout orphan. Father ran the Scouts, mother started off as a Tawny Owl and ended up County Commissioner for Guides. Now "retired" she's ruling the roost with the Trefoil Guild for ex-leaders. Holidays were spent with them taking hordes of kids camping and me and my brother having to tag along - to this day I refuse to sleep under canvas.

Same here...I was so disappointed when my sister went off to Brownies, and I couldn't.
I used to help her win her badges, though...

I was in the Scouts for a while, but (funnily enough...) I didn't fit in there either.

I never had any desire to be a Brownie or a Guide...it was always the stiff God Squadder types who did that in my school

I didnt mind knicking my sister's sweets she got at Brownies tho

It was held in a church hall, that was all musty and smelled of talc, old people, and the aroma of 'godfear'

That was enough to put anyone off.
