It's Kazimir Malevich's "Black Square", first painted in 1915, and one of them (apparently he painted four versions) was auctioned in 2002 for around $1 million!

I had a vague recollection of seeing it in a documentary, as a celebrated work of art... and an art critic standing in front of it extolling its virtues. So I didn't imagine it !
