This one always divides the forum but I really don't want to throw out a roast beef that I paid ÂĢ15 for!!

I had the beef in the fridge from Monday as I had planned to cook it for Boxing day but I didn't.  Then I went to put it in the freezer last night (27th) and the label said 'use by 27th Dec'    I put it in the freezer anyway but I am not sure whether it's safe to eat....and feed to the kids.  It's one of those in the vacuum packs so I am thinking it might be safe?  No?

It will be perfectly fine. If there is one thing I have learnt you can eat pretty much anything long past the time you think you should (even sprouts).

I am doing speciality party sausages with mushrooms and rice tonight. I paid 75p for them and stuck them in the freezer over a week ago. I have no worries about eating them. In fact I scour the supermarkets for their 'best of' ranges and do cheaper meals that way.

My family and friends know better than to EVER ask me if it's too late to eat something--I'll eat it until it smells bad or tastes bad, regardless of the date.

My husband and I combined two kitchens when we got married (10 1/2 years ago). A few years ago, he made me pancakes for breakfast, but he was unhappy because the pancakes didn't rise. We checked the box of baking mix, and it had expired....in 1998!  Now our daughter checks EVERYthing whenever she brings the kids over.

I'm just not even going to mention it to my OH.  He won't even eat bread the day after he buys it and if something is out of date tomorrow he won't eat it today.  Little does he know he's ate stuff out of date and I've scraped off a weeeee bit (it was tiny!) of blue mould of a soda farl before turning it into a pizza farl and giving it to him.

That's what *I* would do.

not only is it perfectly ok, once you defrost and cook it, it then has a further shelf life of a at least 5 days as a cooked joint of meat for sandwiches and cold salads..

Bear in mind beef is better the longer it is hung.. .ie the older it is. .this use by stuff is a load of ol bollox.. the plastic crap they put around meat  is likely to do more damage as it sweats the meat so get rid of that the minute you can

go into any continental shop and see how the meat is hung out in the open for a very long time.. tho most of that is dry cured but the principle is the same.. sell by dates only benefit supermarkets cos silly people throw stuff away that is perfectly fine and go and buy more.. rule of thumb, if it smells off it is off if it doesn't it isn't

Same here; I'm also very lax about re-heating rice and pasta. I haven't poisened anyone yet.

I've got some mince in the pan on the cooker at the minute. Use by date was yesterday so I cooked it and let it stand to let the fat solidify to skim off and will have it with potatos shortly

Don't blame you, I've got fresh tomatoes and the date is over a week ago, they are still rock hard, if they wasn't I'd grill them and have them with a fry up, we throw away too much these days

Indeed! Neither Fish nor Fowl. You shouldn't eat either, at any date. Beef is low risk.
Not wishing to generalise but it seems that generation 3 and 4 are obsessed mit sell by/eat by dates. Yet generations 1 and 2 seemed to have survived mit smell and taste skills.
The youngsters eat and drink all sorts of Franchise themed sheight but.
