On ITV just now(Well in Scotland) it seems eerie watching it now,a portent of the real thing with the twin towers etc.it was made in the seventies, and is a bit far fatched as regards saving folk etc..I remember watching it in the cinema.Quite a "big name" cast.

"The Towering Inferno" is the daddy of "all star cast" films, and IIRC it was the first Hollywood film made as a co-production between two major studios. Warner Bros. and 20th Century Fox had both bought the rights to books about skyscraper disasters, so they decided to combine their resources and star names.
And yes; both source novels were inspired by the building of the World Trade Center...
It was so well done it was compulsive viewing for ages. Every time it was on I just HAD to watch it. Even if I came across it part way through, I just HAD to watch it to the end.
That compulsion has died now. Wonder what it would be like if I watched it now? Almost afraid to now, in case it seems a bit cringy or something.

I know exactly what you mean. I loved this movie when I was younger, but like many movies that I loved and have revisited in my adult years, they have disappointed me, so I'd rather not watch them again and keep the memory of them being amazing movies.
Disaster films have been around for many years. One of the earliest was made in 1901 called Fire! and was filmed in Hove. Obviously silent and would have been a bit cheaper to make than The Towering Inferno - no details known as to who the cast was.
