The Beeb is saying he'll announce he's stepping down 'soon' rather than immediately.

Speakers are supposed to give up their constituency seat and they normally take up a seat in the House of Lords. I think they also get a kickback of around £100K at the end of the term.

If he gives up his seat then there will be a by-election and NuLabour really don't want that now. I think this is what the 'soon' is all about. Watch out too for the £100K golden handshake thingy and whether he takes up his seat in the Lords.

This is the only Speaker that I can recall that did not manage to achieve neutrality in the House. He always was just Labour and supported the Labour agenda. The Speaker is supposed to represent all parties, as Betty Boothroyd and Lord Tonypandy did so admirably before him.

Couldn't agree more.

He will probably be off to the Lords to collect even more from the public purse....while he nods off in his seat.
