Well if you read the thread where this all started you will see that actally a lot of us are opposed to a variety of spelling and grammar misuses. Your example being only one of them. Smiler

Oops sorry, I seem to have quoted the wrong post here. Red Face

Either way I have never ever put myself forward as an English expert.
I mainly do politics, music, and football.

People confuse it with the verb 'to have'; whenever 'have' should be used, people think it's 'of' as in I would have', 'I could have', I will have' . . . . they would say and write 'of' rather than 'have'. It's very, very annoying!

Exactly what's happened Blizzie. I'm only a few miles from Garage and they definitely say should of, not should 'ave, perhaps his friends and family are 'posher' than mine Wink

Sorry Bagel I thought you were winding me up! I'm still half awake too! Generally it's when peeps say e.g. 'I should of done some shopping today' rather than 'I should have done some shopping today' i.e. when it is used as a verb.
Silly to get irritated by it I know but, hey ho!

thats ok Smiler I really do love words and the uses and mis-uses of them Big Grin

so *would have* gets spoken as *would of*..am I on the right track?

I can go one further and say: I *would have* becomes *would've* and would've becomes *wooder*...as long as I can understand what the other person is saying I am happy, its certainly food for thought! Big Grin

The examples you cite are accepted shortened forms (with the exception of 'wooder'!) and are taught as such to those learning English grammar; the apostrophe is used to replace omitted letters.

Sometimes written that way too.

ooh now THAT would annoy me, especially if the person writing the words knew how to spell it the correct way! Shake Head

Ah well.... no but, yes but.... sometimes it's q.funny, (to quote PeterCat,) "in a postmodernist" way ...I quite like saying things wrongly on here for a 'laff' and, God forbid if the spelling and grammar police were after me!

or even 'nuffink' instead of 'nothing'.

Where I live, people say no''in' - using what's called a 'glottal stop' in linguistics'; the apostrophes represent the missing letters t,h and g.

you have very good grammar Thumbs Up

My grammar isn't brilliant, but I do know the difference between have and of.
I also know the difference between you're and your..and there, they're and their.

I now feel as smug as Kris when he looks in a mirror. Razzer

So if I can join to feel just for once, that I've got some feeble grip on the English language, then that would be fab.

Not as clearly as 'of' more like an unstressed vowel followed by a 'v' but has a similar sound to 'of'.
