I thought that it was about time we had our own home and we stopped camping in someone else's field.
Anyone care to join the Society?
Everyone welcome, only condition is opposition to the use of the word of where have should be used e.g. 'should of'/'should have'. Preferably members will post it in their sig, we're on a mission to achieve change!

Sorry Bagel I thought you were winding me up! I'm still half awake too! Generally it's when peeps say e.g. 'I should of done some shopping today' rather than 'I should have done some shopping today' i.e. when it is used as a verb.
Silly to get irritated by it I know but, hey ho!

The problem is, when we speak, we often say 'should've', 'would've', 'could've' etc.

Some people hear this as 'should of' and write it as that.

There teachers should of taut them proper. Glance

Maybe in Essex......

Here it's "should 'ave," "could 'ave," "would 'ave," but more significantly, "might 'ave!"

Laugh

Do Top Righters still write 'should of' then, or are they more correcter than what we is? Glance

Joe - OT, but I asked in one of the MJ threads yesterday who the musical hero was that you were referring to. Maybe you didn't see ... but it's bugging the life out of me!

I'm not keen either but one has to accept that culture changes.

Thumbs Up and maybe other's feelings. Smiler

TBF The language spoken now has changed from when I was at school. It constantly evolves.
What feelings?

Quite a few on here, otherwise it wouldn't have been noted and opposed.

I do agree with the evolution of language, although, as a foreigner, I find that I stick to the grammar I've been taught. Smiler

I had grade six English at "O"(as you probably gathered) and am extremely embarrassed when my German pals ask me questions about English, a language that they seem to know more about.
On one occasion I had to listen as my dear wife had a conversation with an Iraqi who was working as a short order cook in a Hannover suburb.
Things along the lines iof iambic pentameters and past future participle backward perfect future imperfect shite, or summat.

Crying I'm on your ignore list aren't I? Frowner

Madam! I can now reveal that I don't have an ignore list neither have I ever reported anyone :smug:
I thought that someone answered for me but anyway it was Frank Zappa.

Evolving is one thing, but using a word that is not a verb, AS a verb is quite different.

Spelling and grammar rules EVOLVED from the free-for-all that initially existed centuries ago for the precise reason that it was difficult to understand each other if we all made up our own rules as we went along.

So what you're saying is that you're quite happy to evolve back the way into not being sure if what you think you are reading is what the author actually meant. Smiler

Ahhh - thanks for putting me out of my misery! No, no-one answered for you (I don't think!)

I don't do the ignoring/reporting thing either btw. Scared I miss anything and there are plenty other 'reporters' out there.

Well if you read the thread where this all started you will see that actally a lot of us are opposed to a variety of spelling and grammar misuses. Your example being only one of them. Smiler

Oops sorry, I seem to have quoted the wrong post here. Red Face

But how could we have poetry without the odd Iambic Pentameter?
And if we didn't have past perfect and future tenses and participles then we wouldn't know if we were going to talk before about the things that had been happening tomorrow. Laugh
