My little red dot was a tad further up than yours Red Face Glance Big Grin

I posted the wrong chart Red Face

Hahaha! You're a centre-leftie! I knew you weren't as right wing as you thought you were. The vast majority of people aren't what they think they are. It just goes to show how confused the political system has become. HugLaugh

or it could show the left bias of the system to make people think they could vote for a leftward leaning candidate.

The Political Compass Org. is endorsed by the major political parties both left and right as a fair analysis of the system. That's why it's an accepted and accredited tool used by political analysts and educators, again both left and right leaning.

I'm shoulder to shoulder with Gandhi, and as we read very different newspapers (you and me that is not me and Gandhi!) I think that may prove that we can make judgements that are not solely influenced by our choice of reading material Thumbs Up

I really don't think you've understood what I was saying about bias in newspapers at all so I think we'll just leave the subject there thanks.

sorry, i forgot that we arent allowed to mention the reasons he was jailed for in the first place, still at least his wife carried on his work with her "mandella fc", pity he had to get rid of here as fast as possible once he was finaly freed, still look at the inspirational leader he turned into once he was in power, just dont mention the collapse of the economy or the crime statistics.

My OH has just done this test as well and although his dot is a little further up (very near yours LL and I think yours QOTHT) his is just as far over to the left as mine, and we both vote Conservative. Great idea for the test by the way Queen of the High Teas, be interesting to get the whole of the forum to take the test.

I think I did understand what you were saying and since I read the Daily Mail (which has a right wing basis according to some) and watch the news on BBC which I know has a strong left-wing bias, then one probably cancels out t'other and leaves me well-balanced.

I did the test when I was studying politics at college. I had lost interest in politics in the 90's and my mother in law almost bullied me into believing I must be a conservative although I generally voted Lib Dem. It wasn't until I studied politics academically that I started to understand it properly. Our system doesn't reflect what is actually meant by left and right wing any more. All of the major parties are centrist. People make assumptions about their political views without understanding what informs them. I lived in Doncaster for a few years and people used to say you could put a red ribbon on a monkey and people would vote for it. I think that sort of political inculcation is a fundamental cause of what's gone wrong with our political system. Tories are now pro-NHS, Labour are now pro-capitalism. It's a fact that the majority of people in this country don't vote in the way that reflects their own moral or socio-economic beliefs. That's a bizarre state of affairs isn't it. I'm a liberal leftie and know why I am. But it doesn't follow that I will vote Labour in the election. I know I won't vote conservative because I fundamentally disagree with their underlying policies, however, I do understand that the Tories have sought to appease the liberal-left with certain policies, just as Labour have sought to appease the liberal-right with some of theirs. This thread wasn't supposed to be about bashing any ideological viewpoints, just about enlightening people as to the reality of their own convictions.

Or one could use the terms objective and subjective.
The very objective nature of BBC political reporting is structural and thus in some way a left wing approach. But Nick Robinson would bash you if you referred to him as left wing. He's a Tory. Laugh
Whereas the Daily Mail is subjective. It doesn't take politics very seriously, and there is no reason why it should.

And I have found it a very interesting read. But I think some practical considerations enter into this whole political choice thing. For instance I would have a great deal of trouble voting for a Labour government in view of one practical consideration; they cannot successfully run an economy without running it into the ground. I have voted now in many elections and lived through successive administrations of Labour and Conservative and that is my conclusion.

Fair enough, I understand that you are not a labour supporter, but I don't understand why that means you are a Tory by default though.

Now I wouldn't say that I am a Tory by default. I have deliberately chosen never to join a political party. My vote is my choice and I cherish my right to exercise that choice. I judge each vote on what I see in front of my eyes and what I see in front of my eyes right now is the country in a worse mess than it has ever been. I don't think the true horror of the economy is apparent even now. I have chosen to vote Conservative this time because in my view, and that is all I can state, they have the best chance of leading us out of the mire.
