Bob Marley?! Ok, I know a lot of people who like Marley's work cos it just seems/ed fashionable to do so, but have you listened to his lyrics? Expanding on what I said earlier about vocal ability and singing from the gut....I like artists who can write from the heart, sing from the heart, offer a realism to what they're talking about. (Deep stuff if you get what I mean).

At the same time though I adore house music, which is more about production. Some people don't understand the bassline ripping through their veins or dropping in at 00.58 of a track - I do (well, I just bloody love it). Garage music (for me) is escapism. I also love some 60's and 70's (Cream, The Stones, Hendrix, Beatles...), as well as Northern Soul and Motown.
I was never going to do very well in this thread cos I like just about everything, although I tend to like particular tracks as opposed to being a mega fan of an artist and hugely loving everything they do cos its them and not their music (if you get what I mean). Although some artists I do tend to like most of their stuff and appreciate their history or experience and so I would then class myself as a fan of that artist. (Like Ray Charles, Weller, Aretha..etc).

Ahh bugger it, I get what I mean

The Manic Street Preachers are pretty boring

Wha? Wha? Whaaaaaat? *faints*  *does mad violent, angry faces*

I grant you, post EMG, they have been "safe" but Generation Terrorists was a glam rock extravaganza, put GnR and all the other hair metal bands to shame and THB is hands down, a masterpiece.  They did turn Volvo, I grant you, but Richey, not even plugged in, in full on leopard print and James skinny as feck windmilling around, screaming like a girl about socialism, prostitution and gun crime...was not boring.

Stereophonics, yep they went Volvo too.  Early stuff was ace though, Local Boy In The Photograph, Traffic...aww I loved them (for a really short time) then

Ah. See now I am one of those mega fans of Kelly Jones's voice. To me, that fella could sing the instructions on a tampax box and still sound bloody fantastic. His voice is just raw and natural and if you gave that fella a guitar and mic I would happily go and listen to him for hours. No need for any big production or dancers or balls swinging in the wind on a trapeze, his voice would be enough to keep me captivated.

I'd rather not

I'm rather glad you said that. It's been one bollockache of a day and instead of getting into political music wars I just want to chill

Reggae, country and western, jazz funk, ska and techno all have a lot in common. Brainless drivel. In my own tiny little opinon of course

But that's just it. It's your opinion. Doesn't mean it's wrong or right. Whose to say what's wrong or right when it comes to music? The reason there is such a diversity of music out there is because it's all down to personal taste. Fine if someone wants to put across their arguments why they do or do not like something, but ultimately it's down to the individual.

Jesus I'm being so bloody diplomatic. What the hell?

By the way Karma, your point earlier about singers who are not trained but still touch something deep inside you, I'm listening to lots of Bowie at the moment. The man's a genius. Technical vocal ability really means sod all if you can't touch people but today's yoof are ruined before they even get started with the crap that's fed to them. It ain't fair really, nope.

I never used to like Bowie at all. But now, I listen to quite a lot of his stuff. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, I don't know. That's another thing, age, lifestyle, friends...can all play a part in what you listen to or like, well mostly when someone is younger. The amount of people I know who say 'when I was 19 I used to listen to them over and over but I don't now bla bla'. What's great today might not be so great in 10 years, or someone may have taken another listen to an artist and because of that person's experiences might appreciate the artist more second time round. (It's the connection thing).

Thanks for the bad day sympathies, it was my son getting dragged into stuff that had bugger all to do with him....the usual parent wars stuff. Why are some kids such little shits? Ah well, Sunday is a new day. If I can get through it without a tag round my ankle by the end of it then it will have been hailed a success!
