m'phone picked Mortuary for Morrisey

Hahahaha!

Yeah Issy, I can understand why his voice isn't for everyone.  It's just when people say their music is miserable or sad, I always think they musn't have listened to their lyrics. They are really funny, sarky and tongue in cheek, I think that gets lost on people sometimes.

Well I was one of those people - then I actually listened to the lyrics and came to the conclusion that it was just Morrisey that I didn't get...

But then to be fair.... he did give the Smiths their distinctive sound - who else could have led them?

Have to admit to liking the Smiths.  And Fleetwood Mac too, but yes Eva Cassidy (God rest her soul,) produced some of the most mind numbingly dull and boring songs ever.

As for the Carey bird: she has a stunning voice, although she tends to quaver her voice a bit too much at times.  I used to love her. but I'm not fond of her now.  The so-called R & B 'streetwise' Mariah, who tries to act like Mary J Blige and Lil Kim and so on, is not for me.  Her first 4 or 5 albums were amazing, and I liked her in the 90s, but I am not a fan now.  She is a brilliant singer though.

Leccy I agree with you.  Frank Sinatra and Elvis weren't stunningly brilliant singers, nor was Mick Jagger, John Lennon and many many others.. ie: they were not trained and didn't go to stage school or have vocal training, but they were amazing and talented and great to listen to.  Some people have great, smooth, trained vocals, but are pretty dull and don't have much else to offer but their voice.  (perfect examples... Leona Lewis and Joe McElderry.)

I'd rather someone sang with feeling or character than was pitch perfect.

I like both. I get tingles and my tummy does a little jig if I hear a brilliant singer on X factor or American Idol (it usually happens on American Idol right enough). But then I like them who sing from the gut as well, even if they don't fit in to the 'norm'.

Ahhh I like a bit of everyfink! If it connects then it connects!

Westlife and The Lighthouse Family must be high up there.  Boybands in general.  Even further back, Sade.  The Manic Street Preachers are pretty boring.  Stereophonics dull and derivative.  UB40 after and including "Labour of Love" in 1983.  Paul Weller seems to live off his modfather reputation but I can't think that he's done anything of much interest since "Wild Wood" around 1996.

I've missed some really obvious ones here, thanks folks. Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, Status Quo, UB40 and Manic Street Preachers can all actually just f*ck off really  I know jazz/funk isn't a band but if it was it could cheerfully go hang itself, painfully pretentious drivel is what it is, yes sir.

Bob Marley has also bored me to tears and Michael Jackson has often made me wonder if he ever knew what 'singing' was all about at all.
