LOL I can't believe this thread.  I agree with virtually every single persons contribution, except for the Beatles: I do like them and always have.  Not sure I agree that someone can't qualify as a band though, because they don't play instruments. Maybe that's true, maybe not, but nevertheless, Westlife are shit anyway.  Almost every one of their songs sounds the same, and the fact they had 15 number ones or whatever it was, proves that there was little competition at the time.

Also may I add Joan Armatrading and Tracy Chapman and Suzanne Vega and Sade, and other boring shit acts that have been massively over-rated over the years.   And don't get me started on BLOODY KATIE MELUA and MICHAEL BUBLE!    Both of them two make me instantly reach for the OFF switch!

The most recent over-rated act IMO is Kings of Leon: the most over-rated band of the last 5 years.  'Sex on fire' and 'Use Somebody' were OK but everything else is shit. Their song 'Four kicks' is bloody diabolical and it's one of the worst songs I have ever heard.  The lead singers voice makes me want to tear my eardrums out on this track.

It's funny isn't it how there are so many acts that are apparently so amazing and innovative and are praised highly by the critics, and yet no-one seems to like them.  I do actually 'quite' like Simply red and coldplay, but agree that they are over-rated a bit.  That Coldplay lead singer is one of the most big headed and arrogant wankers on the planet, even more that BONO.  Well, maybe not.

KATIE MELUA and MICHAEL BUBLE!

As soon as I saw this thread I knew Katie Melua (and her millions of flipping bicycles) would be in here ... but Mr Bubbles???

That's just wrong - I could look at him all day! And his songs are lovely

Agree with pepsi about James Blunt  - I think he has a fabulous voice, but his songs are so utterly boring

I saw Fleetwood Mac at Leeds Poly (in old money) It was after the band imploded and before they reinvented themselves as that bland, middle of the road, partner swapping, rocking middle age, combo type thing. They were dreadful, although to be fair they probably weren't with the rest of us.  A lot of people walked out.
Had Peter Green left by then?

I agree with that...(even though shes not a band)...I cannot stand her version of Over the Rainbow...just sing the bloody tune FGS!
I am SO glad that you agree cos I think she ruined that song... whats with all the wailing?

A song should be able to stand up on its own.

A bit like 'Without You'.. Nilson just sung it as it was intended. The words and melody were enough. Then Mariah Carey came along and ruined it with her oral gymnastics.

Level 42. Please die. Actually, they were around a long time ago so with any luck, they are already dead. Honourary mention: Dire Straits. And Simply Red.
! Those were the three that came to mind as soon as I saw the title.. opened the thread and thought I'd been sleep-typing again
Swing Out Bloody Sister too

Re Mariahs Oral Gymnastics.....
Isn't that how she got her recording contract from that bloke that headed Sony?
Coz she sure as hell didn't get it for having any singing talent imo.
I'm deffo seconding the addition of Westlife to the - gulps - list!!!111!!!!! I don't mind the odd cover version but to make a career of nowt else and to not add a single thing to the original is boring beyond belief. Then they even copied the video for Uptown Girl IIRC.
*Nails James Blunt on with Westlife*

Oh and I am sorry but Eva Cassidy ruined so many songs because she took 3 hours to sing them..

Every time I hear her from now on I think of your quote. Though it wont make it anymore bearable it'll help pass the time
Listening to "Over the Rainbow" makes as much sense as phoning the speaking clock for entertainment

Well honestly she has to have the most boring voice in the universe...

Have you heard her version of Fields of Gold by Sting?
Well if you need an insomnia cure I recommend it....

I would have said it impossible to take all the fun out of that song before EC covered it to

I'd like to add FYCs version of "Ever fallen in love" to the list of 'How on Earth can you hate a song so much that you would do that to it'!..EC would have been proud of it

1. I apologise for forgetting Laughing Len. 2. Yes! Peter Green had left Fleetwood Mac. 3. Yes! I thought Yes were wonderful. I had bought the first three albums and booked to see them three times on the same tour. Alas! Note perfect, no diversion, they may as well havers to the records. My mate was threatened by Bill Bruford for pointing this out.
