I'm 37, 38 in august, my skin is awful, I rarely sleep without aids, when I do sleep I wake up lord knows how many times sweating. Everything annoys me. According to statistics I should not get my menopause until I am in my 50's which is when my mother her mother and her mother before her got it. But then I read another blarf that said, you can go through menopausal symptoms for up to 10 years before it actually happens.

Can I opt out now?

Have you tried a fan for the night? I have Peripheral neuropathy and I have to have a fan trained on my feet and legs all day and night otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep for the pain and burning. But the fan has the dual purpose of keeping me from perspiring during sleep. The fan by my bed is on all night long.

Its not that they get too hot, I just have horrendous night sweats, whole body. I have to change my bedding everyday.

If I didn't have the fan on all night because of my PN, I too would be soaked in sweat all night but the fan stops that from happening. It's worth a try and they're very cheap now. My husband came home with two new ones for me last week and they only cost around ÂĢ7.50 each. It's the first time I have needed replacement fans for well over 6 years. The old ones still work but they are a bit noisy and rattley now.

I'm an awful sleeper, I get too hot, then I wake I sweating cos I am dreaming shitty, then I am too hot to fall back to sleep, then I wake up again too hot, then I fall asleep after having more shit dreams, and thats on a good night when I do manage some sleep.

I am off to bed to try to get some sleep now. Mr Cinds wants to snuggle.

I am worried cos someone told me that if your mum had a hard time.. then you probably will.

My mother seems to have had a twenty year menopause... mental woman at times. And the hot sweats were unbeleivable... she would be fine one minutes... and literally soaking wet the next (reckoned her and my dad would have to change the bedding a couple of times a night cos of her night sweats!)

She eventually agreed to go on HRT... (the horse wee one!)... which settled things down. But then she would secretly come off it without telling anyone... go completely pyscho bitch mental at someone (usually me)... and then phone a week later and say... 'whoops sorry... I'd stopped taking the HRT didn't think I needed it anymore!"

I don't want to be THAT woman!

My mum suffered badly, but then she did lose her husband at a young age..but I was usually the brunt of all sorts of insults.I dont think I randomly yell at my kids, think I'm less moody than I ever was and apart from the travel phobias seem to be in rude health.Very rude health!

Cinds,I'd ask the GP for a blood test to rule out any other factors then (s)he might be able to prescribe some HRT.You're young and dont want to have to put up with sleepless nights for any longer than necessary

Hello all wavey
OMG..where do I begin?!?!
Have always had hideous periods/PMS etc...but alwayd did FFS get on with it, (apart from when I was puking up, severe diarrohea from the cramps, passing out etc. with the pain!) And, absolutely believed that all the stuff I said when my hormones were raging were things I would supress/tolerate otherwise- so when for e.g. my ex put it down to my hormones that I voiced my unhappiness I was/am clear that I would just somehow verbalise it then rather than put up with the shit.....
Really looked forward to the menopause..no more curse...yippee Thumbs Up How wrong was I?! Wouldn't wish this on anyone.
Think I've been in peri-menopause for about 4 yrs. (periods every 2 weeks , some lating for 5 weeks at a time etc.etc.)...
Recently...haven't had a period for 3 months, had that feeling of 'about to come on' every single day of that -physically and emotionally. Then there's that feeling that, every day, I just want to pull the covers over my head and not face the day/can't be arsed with anything/no motivatin/energy/enthusiasm etc.....then, when I do get up I often spend the first hour or so needing to find a cold floor to lay down on before I pass out/throw up.
Can't even begin to describe how this is sooooo unlike 'me'!
Then there's the... I feel exhausted, but not tired/sleepy, so you're up all night..interspersed with 'sleeping for the UK'
I am seriously considering HRT, but then I also think FGS , generations before us did without and had much harder lives than I have..bloody well pull yourself together girl and get on with it...
Anyway...that's the bad news, good news is that this forum has been a serious bloody lifeline whilst I've been going through this shit!

Soops... my mum was just like you described... At the time I was PA to a Directorate Manager in a hospital... one of his depts was Pharmacy.

Anyway... I happened to mention my mum's problems.. and he was on the phone to the cheif pharmacist immediately (bless him, my boss, remember him saying "quality of life lass... she has to have some quality of life").

End result was that she was on the wrong HRT.... there were also complications cos she has fibroids. The cheif pharmacist had a look at her blood results at put her on the Equine Oestrogen HRT (the horses pee one!).

She is (when she takes the bloody tablets) a changed woman.

Also... taking HRT helps to minimise the risks of running low for such a long period of time. Your comment about generations of women before us... do bear in mind.. previous generations of women would usually have more children than us... be pregnant for more of their lives than us... not take contraceptives etc....

Point of the post is... as my boss said to me... "you gotta have a quality of life lass"... and when my ma's case got looked at by someone who understood the female hormones (extremely complex systems).... a taylor made solution was found!

LOL Laugh Gladly others don't feel this shit....some peeps just seem to sail through....and I didn't even mention the more 'obvious stuff.... last years severe hair loss...I tell you, it was my crowning glory, thick, long, wavey, bouncy, shiny..or standing on the back doorstep naked in the early hours of the morning in the snow feeling that you just need to get out of the sauna! etc.etc.!

Awww thanks Ditty, you're a sweetheart Hug Suppose I've always been a full of life/energetic/passionate/get on with it kinda person and am really uncomfortable with becoming a 'can't be arsed' kinda person (not that most peeps would notice- I put on a good act!)... Probs will go on HRT... did finally get the otherside of 'stoic' a few weeks ago and saw my GP (he's fantastic,I want to marry him :-)) so just waiting for blood tests to come back and once we've ruled out the other more scary explanations, I'll be getting that HRT down my neck!......then i'll probs get my life back and never be on here again LOL!

I did that about 5 years ago (with troll bitch from hell woman GP, before I found my fantastic GP!)- came back positive, so she did another, to be sure - that came back negative, so, understandably, the second was correct, despite having been able to set my clock almost to the minute by my periods for 30 +years and things had dramatically changed..loss of concentration, sweats, hot flushes etc. etc.!

I have suffered a bit with hot flushes but I haven`t had the mood swings, although hubby says how would he know the difference. Roll Eyes
My most annoying symptom has to be "menopausal amnesia". Prior to the menopause, I had a good memory and a reasonably good vocabulary but not any more. It drives me mad at times!
On the subject of memory loss, my neighbour told me this story. Her friend, who was going through the menopause, had bought some herbal remedy which claimed to help restore memory. When my neighbour asked her if the tablets worked, she replied, "I don`t know because I keep forgetting to take them". Crazy
