Top rate storyline and acting. I love the principle characters, they are so interesting. I wonder if we miss much by not being able to speak Danish?
I love the pace and depth of these Scandinavian shows.
I have a Swedish friend who I asked about the translation of Wallander and she said she found it interesting the way they did it and said it was pretty good, made sense.
Its such a nice change from the glib and glossy American stuff that often lack real humanity.
The Killing has finished.
I'd like to quote Sam Wollaston (TV reviewer in The Guardian)......
He says:-
"I will say, however, that the end of The Killing has left a frightening gaping void in my life...
....The Killing is brilliant, the best thing on television for yonks.......Ten out of 10."
'The Killing' has been brilliant throughout and the last couple of episodes had some real edge-of-the-seat moments.
Looking forward to the next series and the return of Lund and her jumper.
By the way, if anyone has watched the French crime series 'Spiral', they may be interested to know that the third series starts on BBC4 this Saturday.

Aargh! I just knew this was going to happen! Why does it have to be Saturday, and why can't they give us a break for a month or two?
I found it pretty difficult to keep-up with "The Killing" and only managed to watch one double-episode "live" throughout the whole 10 weeks - now I've got to make arrangements for "Spiral" too!
Me too! I'm usually out on a Saturday night but managed to catch up via the wonderful i-player thing
I'd love to watch it, but don't like subs. I want to watch not read.

I thought that I'd find it distracting, too, but I didn't.

I know I do. I tried to watch a French film at the weekend. I did, but I never knew what to look at. I really prefer to have the drama either in English or in German. Sorry.
Had to bump this as C4 are starting showing the American remake of this tonight at 9pm.
I'm not overly hopeful that it will have the atmosphere and the class of the original but for anyone who didn't see it because they don't/can't do subtitles then give it a go.
Oh, and if you're reading this Lori, it's set in Seattle this time
NosieRosie - I was looking for knitting patterns on the web a while ago and hit on this
Loved the Danish one and will watch the US one too.
Radio Times review...
The Killing
Thursday 07 July
9:00pm - 10:55pm
Channel 4
Pilot/The Cage
1&2/13, series 1
All right, let's get it over with: no, the American re-make by AMC, the people who gave us Mad Men, isn't a patch on the Danish original. How could it be when it doesn't have that bruised goddess, detective Sarah Lund at its heart? So it would be wholly unfair to condemn this perfectly serviceable version of The Killing, or Forbrydelsen, which became cult viewing on BBC4 earlier this year, for failing to attain the impossible. It stands alone, at least on the evidence of the first two episodes, as a good, involving crime drama. Devotees of the original can feel smug as they recognise familiar elements, transplanted from Copenhagen to rainy Seattle; a young girl, Rosie Larsen, is missing from home. Detective Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) interrupts packing on her last day at work before she moves to California to marry her boyfriend, to investigate. As the horror of Rosie's demise unfolds, the city's mayoral candidate Darren Richmond (Billy Campbell) is caught in the backdraft.

Also read in the Radio Times (a small piece on the popularity of the jumpers following Sarah Lund) that the reason there are so many knitting patterns out there is historical - helped to identify drowned sailors!!
A bit like a family tartan - each family had their own pattern...
Wanted to post this before the show actually started, but it's been a real pain tonight.
I will be watching the first few episodes, but I'm not expecting too much as my understanding is that they're virtually frame-for-frame remakes of the Danish originials. Things will almost certainly change as it develops, though: if only because the political structure in the US is different...
I have other information re the US series, but although it doesn't directly address plot developments I'm wary of going into details, as I've personally been concerned about spoilers in the past...

Bunnehhhhhhh *mwah* *mwah* word up mi sista!
That's interesting, I know that the Isles around Scotland each have their own distinct fairisle type patterns and some are distinct to families probably for the reasons you say. I know that the women used to just carry the patterns in their heads and pass them down from mothers to daughters which is really neat.
Also the Shetlanders have a great saying. They say that they can't sit 'hand-idle' which means they always have to have their hands busy even if they are just sitting.
So the women knit or sew and the men carve etc.
So what did everyone think?
I found myself hankering after the original tbh but it was a lot better than I thought it would be. I think they have tried to match the actors as best as they could and it did have the nice pace and atmosphere to an extent of the original
I never saw the original version, it passed me by. .this seems ok but I got annoyed at the amount of times the actors were obviously told to stare with a meaningful expression on their faces to try to convey something yet saying nothing. . I understand the concept of less is more in film but there were too many instances of the deep meaningful stare going on, to the point it actually irritated me by the end..
will carry on watching tho
I know what you mean Olly but I don't mind that. It's the nausea inducing mtv camera angles that drive me mad in some shows.
It is worth sticking with, if it's half as good as the original then it will be worth watching. It's not your usual crash bang wallop crime drama. I think a lot of it centres on the emotions of the characters and how events affect them as they unfold,
Plus I did find myself getting a good look at Seattle!!
hahaha yes there was a lot of 360 degree filming while staring meaningfully or with angst at the camera. .I will stick with it as tis the sort of thing I like. .will just have to put up with the irritating directors flim noir style. . well I think it's film noir .. I am a bit of a philistine so not sure what I mean really.. can't find the words.
I never saw the original so I can't compare it, but I thought it was quite good.
I know what you mean about the "meaningful stare" shots, Olly.
I'm just watching the US version now and I'm loving it and cursing myself that I missed the original version on BBC4
I watched and enjoyed look forward to the next episode.
I saw the first half of last night's. It's more or less the same plot but not acted as well as the original. However still very watchable.

Oh, it's a lot more than just the same plot. Watching the first two episodes was a very strange experience for me: most of it really was the "frame-for-frame" remake that I'd been led to believe. They even scrupulously copied all the little incidental details, such as Lund's (Linden's) compulsive gum-chewing. (And a heads-up to fans: apparently next week's episode reproduces Lund's famous home eating habits! )
Don't get me wrong: I'll probably keep watching (as I said earlier, I think it will try to ring the changes as the series progresses, and the political sub-plot develops). I also think that HMs who missed the Danish original will enjoy the remake a lot...
Plus I did find myself getting a good look at Seattle!!
Be careful here: they've included a number of "tourist" shots of Seattle, but the series proper wasn't filmed in the US, never mind Washington State. It was actually filmed across the border in Vancouver!
Oh really Eugene? Thanks for telling me. All I know of Seattle is based on what I've been told by two groups of friends.
One lot of them are from Vancouver and the other lot attended the now infamous Battle of Seattle WTO protest in 99.
Unsuprisingly neither group had anything nice to say about it! I've been a bit intrigued ever since.
It actually looked quite nice last night, if a bit skyscraper heavy, but now you have me wondering.
We need Lori to give us the heads up

I believe the aerial shots are genuine, and the series has become famous for it's night-time views of the Space Needle!
I googled it , Filmed in Gastown Vancouver.
Is anyone watching this series on C4? I am hanging in there with it but everytime I watch it, it just makes me want to see the original again.
I think that they have tried to stick to the original as much as possible but I don't think the characters (or the actors playing them) are as watchable as the original Danish ones.
I loved so many of those characters from the original but the only one I like in this version is Lunds sidekick cop
It's hard work this Veggie
Did you watch the original on the Beeb Donkey? It was brilliant and really gripping.
this version is a bit meh
I've been watching it, Veggie. I never saw the original though, so I have nothing to compare it with.
I've recorded tonight's episode and will watch it later.

No missed it first time round.
Had some hopes for this one
The Beeb have taken the original offline now. If they repeat it, I'll give you a shout Donkey.
Yogi, if it sticks to the same story as the original then there are some great twists coming
