prob they do - certainly FB I would think

I've got a few on FB actually, which is handy for work based things Laugh Big Grin

I won't have any pupils/students ex or otherwise as friends - the headmaster has said we are not to so I don't - I personally don't want pupils contacting me but we only go up to year 11 so it is prob a bit different Big Grin

My school is a bit blurred along the teacher/student friendship line (which sounds welll dodgy, but it's not).

It came up in Ofsted that teachers and students had friendships rather than just...student-teacher relationships. I don't know if this sounds like a bad thing or no?

TBH i think in 6th form it it's different - my son goes to a college - as most schools in our area don't have a 6th form and he calls them by their first name- no uniform etc
we are still very formal - some of the younger staff are friendly but I personally prefer a professional distance - I know I sound stuffy but if we were too friendly discipline would go

Ooh I find first names with teachers reallly weird! The college that a lot of my friends go to call their teachers by their first names and it always confuses me.

OMG - enough said - we are actually told by the head not to have any students at all as friends and most of us don't - some of the non- teachers do - i personally think it is very dodgy to have students as friends and I won't put myself in that position but as I say - our school does not have a 6th form

It is different in the sixth form. I don't have anyone from the lower years on FB. I definitely agee there should be some distance. To be honest I'm not overly keen on having any students on there, and when the first sixth former requested me as a friend I thought long and hard about it. But it's a completely different relationship than with the lower years and I couldn't come up with any reasons to justify declining.
Ducky
lol... Ros.. Molly was only year 9 at the time we saw that pic. The man was just plain stupid imo.

ICT teacher as well... I did say to daughter, well don't be taking any of his advice on online safety then!

Calling teachers by their first name... I thought only the right on drama teachers did that.. (my drama teacher was called Ross, and did wear brown cords!!).

As a parent, and as an adult, and even from the prehistoric era of when I was a student... I think a degree of distances is the right thing for a teacher/student.

Gets murky in higher ed though! My friend had to keep her affair with her tutor, when she was doing her art degree, a secret... they are now married. There were still rumours though... and accusations (she got a first lol!)

I feel that my school may be pretty slack here Laugh

I was going to a gig with my art teacher for absolutely ages until I had to cancel 'cause of going to Germany.

He still confides in me about students he really dislikes as well. My drama teachers are the same.

I'm also going to his wedding next year, and was invited to my other art teacher's evening reception last weekend.

I know it could sound like we have no discipline or anything, but I really would never consider messing them around because of how 'close' (this may be the wrong word but I can't find a better one) I feel to them.

At my last school a young PE teacher had a relationship with a 15 year old male student (who just so happened to be my newphew Mad) She was suspended for a week then allowed back when she claimed it was over. Two weeks later it was discovered to still be going on and she was sacked. Three months later she was back because her solicitor apparently found procedural errors in her dismissal. I'm still convinced however that the school just waited till the boy had left school then brought her back. She was a family friend of the head.

And that is exactly why I think its a bad thing! SOME (Ros, Ducky... I would like to EMPHASIS THE SOME.. as in not you) but SOME teachers can be as immature as the kids. I have experienced teachers that are 'down with the kids' and heard them joining in with the bitching about the unpopular ones.

It shouldn't be that way. IMO.

I think its disgusting too. I was really shocked when I first realised. I was spoilt at my last school with a wonderful head of department. This one is just a total joke. Luckily she's been fine with me so far but another maths teacher bears the brunt of her gossiping. I've lost count of the number of students who've told me the poor woman is a crap teacher. And it's all because the year she taught statistics was the first year ever the school had a student fail it..... then this so called professional head of department decided to scrap doing that exam all together and made sure all the students knew why. She fails to tell them she'd never taught the subject before and was standing in for this head when she was on maternity leave. Makes my blood boil. Shake Head

There's a health and social teacher at my school who hasn't turned up to the lessons for the past five weeks, so five students complained to the head of sixth form and he revealed the name of one of them to the woman in question, who then launched a full scale attack on her. Which I think is completelyyy out of order. She was upset about it for days and dreads going to her lessons now Frowner

Nighty night btw Ducks Hug Valentine

See that too is totally unacceptably Mary. The 'woman in question' should be taken to task about it!!!! And why on earth did the head of sixth only reveal one student name... all or nothing surely.

mind you, as head of sixth.. he should be aware of whether his staff are at work or not!

The girl getting the grief should put in a formal complaint!

I know, I think it's really unfair on her Frowner One of the others who complained was sat right next to her when she got called out of her lesson as well.

I think she has put in one actually, either that or her parents have.

Good!

I hope this girls parents do take up the fight... and fight it hard!!!

Hubby & I had to take the music teacher and the head of upper school down a peg or two a couple of years ago. they were acting like sulky teenagers, and basically having a go at molly and making unfair requests on her (long long story)... anyhow... hubby eventually had enough! And played hard ball! He kicked their arses, took it to the governors and the education peeps at the council.

Problem got solved... but there will always be those at Mo's school that brand her as a trouble maker... and her school is always in the local papers. A student only has to sneeze and the press officer has the local gazette up to do a peice on it.

When Mo got her scholarship, which is a major acheivement, head of upper school couldn't even bring himself to mention it to her... he cannot even look her (or us) in the eye!
