Hello all,
I am a bit scared to say my pooter may be looking better... in case I jinx it!
I have battled blaster worms, trojans and all sorts in the past... but NOTHING like the latest infection my baby got! I had AVG running and my internet security options on medium.
I didn't download anything or click on anything, I just went on website apparently (I think it
may have been smiley related!
)
But this malware (SystemSecurity 4.52 the bugger is called)... totally takes over your pooter. IT stops you running any antivirus or antispyware software, it stops you running task manager (so you can't kill it there), it stops you connecting to the internet (so you can't access any removal kits)... and then when it realises you are on to it... it stops you opening anything and overwrites your desktop wallpaper with a message about how selfish you are not buying its (fictious) security software and how you are not protecting your family, kids & boss from your nasty infections!
It accesses a weakness in internet explorer (I have now switched to Google Chrome for a while).
To manually remove this bugger I'd have to find and destroy over 50 files and 30 entries in the registry (a place I swore I would never play in again... not since years ago when I tried to nick a higher proportion of mine and my neighbours shared dial up allocation.... and broke the registry!!). Hopefully it won't come to that...
I THINK I've sorted it... I think. I think I have tricked it by finding its main brain and renaming its folder... then I was able to access AVG and run a full scan, AND run a full scan with Spybot!
If I have any more problems though, I am off to buy Spyware Doctor!
Ok, tech rant over.... back to being fickle blonde!
