I can't be bothered to hunt down the other thread, so decided to create a new, updated, quicker and all round improved thread.

Today I took myself off to see Blade Runner 2049. Before doing so last night I watched the original 'Final Cut' to refresh my memory.

At present I'm not going to say too much, mainly because I don't want to drop spoilers and I am also digesting what I have seen.

I was dreading it as I am a big fan of the original but I did not leave with my head in my hands, so that was a plus. I felt there was plenty to tie the two together visually and also in the odd 'motif' scattered throughout the film, there is also links storywise as you would expect -again, can't say too much. If you are going to watch it in 4DX, then take a raincoat, it's a very wet film. I thought the music was great and for me was very important to the feel of the film. The film is in 3D too and I always seem to sit there going "that was for the 3D effect....". I think I will definitely need to watch it again when In receive my 4K copy.

Thanks Baz

I never take notice of reviews before I see a film. I like to make my mind up. It's kinda history repeating itself as the original was a bit of a bomb, but went on to become a cult movie.

I think the reviews have actually been pretty good - it's 88% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

However, it hasn't been doing as well as expected commercially - partly because it's so long that cinemas can only do 3 screenings a day...

Me? I'm planning to see it at the weekend...

O/T Eugene ...I bought Jaimie’s book yesterday ...so all three of us have it now

@Eugene's Lair

You are not wrong about the length. There were only a couple of occasions where I wanted things to move on a bit quicker, generally the pacing was not bad. I think some less patient people who may disagree.

How are you watching it? I had the option of IMAX 3D, 3D, 2D, 4DX. Plumped for plain old 2D as I did not want to see 3D and it's far too wet a film for 4DX.

Almost certainly IMAX 3D, although it's not booked yet...

4DX isn't an option for me, but I doubt I would bother with it anyway as it's something which I consider - whether rightly or wrongly - to be a bit of a gimmick, and more likely to distract from the movie than add to it.

I have a few questions, EC, if you're able to answer them without going into "spoiler" territory...

1) Was rewatching "Blade Runner" before seeing the new movie helpful?

2) Do you think the new movie can "stand alone", i.e. could someone who hasn't seen the first film follow it?

3) Have you seen the three short films that fill the gaps between the two movies? If so, did you find they helped your understanding/enjoyment of the new movie?

  1.

I'm firmly on the side of gimmick with 4DX. It's fun as a one-off, but I knew I would not do it for many films in the future, if at all.

  1. I rewatched the original for a couple of reasons. I wanted to get myself into the mood for the new film and I had not seen the Final Cut version, but having watched it (and knowing the changes) it was so subtle I hardly noticed, except for the removal of the voiceover and ending. Helpful, probably not as I have seen the film dozens of times.

  1. I think that most people, if they read the information at the beginning and pay attention to what characters say when they explain something should be able to understand what is unfolding. There are references to the previous film and there is definitely a few occasions where having seen the previous film you know what is happening on screen and who that character is and their past. (I so want to talk to someone who has seen it and it's driving me a bit mad, I want those "how did they...", "wow, I was not expecting..." moments to be discussed).

  1. When I know I am going to see a film I tend to avoid reviews and any discussion of the film, including things like the web shorts. The only thing I do watch is a trailer. Once I have seen the film I then start to read reviews and catch up on the shorts. When they did that for Alien Covenant I went back after and watched the shorts. I have a friend who bases his cinema trips on Guardian reviews! Mad in my opinion.

Enjoy the film @Eugene's Lair and I'll be interested in your opinion of the film.

@Eugene's Lair - Did you manage to get to see the film?

I watched the three shorts this week. I think they would have helped going in, but not by a big margin. I managed to pick up most of the points by watching the film. Although interesting in their own right.

Yes, EC - I saw it in IMAX 3D on Sunday. I (and my friends) thought it was very, very good.

The reason I asked you if you'd seen the shorts was because one of my colleagues saw the film on its release date, and found some of the background detail confusing. I'd then speculated that it might have helped if he'd seen the shorts, which are supposedly meant to bridge the gaps between the two films.

Having now seen the movie, I think the only one of the shorts which really helped in that respect was "Black Out 2022". In the film, the references to the "Black Out" made it sound rather arbitrary, however when seen in conjunction with the short it becomes clearer (IMO) as to not just what the Black Out was, but why it occurred.

I made the assumption during the film that the blackout had destroyed almost all the data from dialogue, but I do tend to agree now that it might have been the short of benefit most.

Could you imagine how long the film would be if they had added more information in !!!!

I have since seen Mark Kermodes sort of review. I agree with him now thinking back how this is like a piece of art. I have also listened to the soundtrack which I think is awesome.

I read somewhere that Villeneuve made a (perhaps jokey) comment that this is one film where you won't get a Director's Cut, because it's long enough already!

Having said that:

1) The "Blade Runner" Director's Cut remains one of the few examples of the format where most of the changes were to remove things!

2) Jared Leto has made references in interviews to at least one scene he filmed which - although he didn't know for certain if it was in the movie when he made the comments - sounds as if it did not make the final cut. It therefore may well turn up at some point in the future...

3) For all the talk about its length, "Blade Runner 2049" is still half an hour shorter than "Titanic"...
