I think the Latvian representative gave the game away re Italy's success: they've just rejoined Eurovision after pulling out of it years ago.
Italy was (I think) one of the original members, and (like us) they were one of the 5 nations that coughed-up most of the cash for it (IIRC, that's why they left: they got fed up doing so badly in a competition they bankrolled).
Italy's once again one of the 5 major contributers, and I think there's a lot of political pressure to convince them they've made the right decision...
