As a near teetotaller I am curious as to what they find.

Ah, pre-loading before they go out.
£9 own brand vodka. Wow that's cheap.
That's true - Supermarkets don't help with their cheap pricing.
*Turns over*
I wonder if banning the cheap alcohol would tame it a bit
Culturally I think it is too engrained and people will probably go down the illegal route to getting alcohol.
For me better education and a long term move to changing our relationship with alcohol. How we do that I have not a clue.
As a nation we seem to love our alcohol and junk food.
Yes I guess you're right
ta for posting-i forgot about this prog
also
another prog on about siouxsie etc... on at 10pm
*off to set record*
That was a surprise. I did not know that Scotland had not implemented the minimum unit pricing because the Scotch Whisky Association had taken it to the courts and effectively put a halt to it.
I know....you learn something every day
I wonder if this is like the cigarette thing. Too much in taxes coming in from the booze.

Really? That surprises me because we're not allowed any cheap multibuy deals up here. Apparently we're all a bunch of old soaks that have to be nannied... makes me fume. I think it's totally pointless - if you're an alcoholic, the fact that drink isn't offer isn't going to make a difference -you'll just go without something else to buy booze. The people who suffer are people who drink in moderation and can't enjoy the bargains you can in England.
Yes, exchequer revenue will fall, but so will death and disease through over consumption of alcohol.
And do they have a problem with alcohol there Joe?

Crackers innit Kaffs

Will it though? As I say, if you have a problem, you'll just not eat to have a drink instead?

Kaffy, you might want to watch this programme on catch-up (on 20 mins long). They throw a lot of facts and figures around and I did not catch them all.
It would seem despite what was said on the programme, there is some price control in Scotland from what you are saying.
I see

I'll try to EC - we definitely have price control here. Log on to Sainsbury's online and see the deals and the small print says 'not available in Scotland'

I don't think we do over there sprout, bit like France, no binge drinking there either.

According to the programme anyway. It's hard to get an idea on how many people have a real alcohol problem as opposed to those who drink in excess socially, like the students featured in the programme.
If you are a hardened drinker I don't think any price increase will stop you.
3. DRINKS PROMOTIONS
Off-sales: restriction on supply of alcoholic drinks free of charge or at reduced
price
3.1 Premises licences and occasional licences contain a mandatory licence
condition restricting irresponsible promotions. One of the ways in which a drinks
promotion in respect of on-sales of alcohol can be irresponsible is if it “involves the
supply of an alcoholic drink free of charge or at a reduced price on the purchase of
one or more drinks (whether or not alcoholic drinks).” (paragraph 8(2)(b) of schedule
3 and paragraph 7(2)(b)of schedule 4 to the 2005 Act). Section 4 of the Alcohol Act
amends the 2005 Act to extends the application of paragraph 8(2)(b) of schedule 3
and paragraph 7(2)(b) of schedule 4 to the 2005 Act to off-sales of alcohol. Examples
of such promotions to which these paragraphs apply include:
• buy one, get one free
• three for the price of two
• five for the price of four, cheapest free
• 3 bottles of wine for £10
• buy six, get 20% off.

They said on the programme that the UK had overtaken France, Italy and I think one other country in terms of liver disease. So one would presume from that that they have problems and have had problems.
So why is it ingrained in some people over here, to get absolutely hammered every time they go out.
On the odd occasion I go out I never go with the thoughts of getting drunk. It just happens depending on the night/venue/company

I remember as a lad out on the town when last orders was called there was a rush to get the last couple of pints. Maybe it has something to do with the old closing times, but now we have extended openings we have never lost the "last orders" mentality.

Yeah, there's a point

All I can say is that I don't see the same style of drinking on the continent. Maybe we're more upfront here.
The real cost of alcohol?
Stella Artois - £5 for a 4 pinter .. in the fridge, right now
The real cost of alcohol?
wife beater - £5 for a 4 pinter .. in the fridge, right now
I like a good drink when not pregnant (it's actually something I am not missing in the slightest and we all know how much I liked a good drink!) and think the price of drinks these days is ridiculous unless you want to drink some cheap, nasty tasting rubbish!
The government should worry more about THEM paying alcoholics to drink themselves to death. Disability Living Allowance is handed out to alcoholics because of their dependency on it. I think THAT is disgusting and should be stopped. Why give them more money to drink and ruin lives?

Stella Artois /ˈstɛlə ɑrˈtwɑː/, informally called Stella, is a pilsner beer of between 4.8 and 5.2% ABV. It has been brewed in Leuven, Belgium, since 1926, although it is brewed in other locations as well. A lower alcohol content (4% ABV) version is also sold in the UK, Republic of Ireland,Canada and New Zealand.[1] Stella Artois is one of the prominent brands of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewer.
