A couple from Scotland who won Tuesday's record-breaking €185m EuroMillions jackpot have decided to go public. They claimed the prize yesterday.

UK National Lottery operator Camelot said the couple, who are from the Falkirk area, would be unveiled at 2.30pm this afternoon at a hotel in the town.

The couple matched all five main numbers and both Lucky Stars.

The massive jackpot was capped at €185m after a series of rollovers made it the largest ever in Europe.

The winning numbers were 17, 19, 38, 42 and 45, and the Lucky Stars were 9 and 10.

The win will catapult them into 430th place in this year's Sunday Times Rich List.

They claimed the prize yesterday.

Good luck to them but I would have kept it quiet.

Duck tape?  You can get a lot in a Ford Fiesta. £162 mill is going to bring allsorts out the woodwork. I don't think I would feel safe knowing people know I am that rich.

I would never never never have 'gone public' with this.  As someone said, they will be hounded til they die.  I would not even tell my friends...  You would have everyone leeching off you, even extended family..and constantly expecting you to pay for everything... I got 18 grand redundancy in the late 90s from a job I had been in for 10 years, and certain family (2 cousins/2 aunts) were my new BFFs for a couple of months, and kept begging for money, even though they rarely said more than 6 words a month to me normally ...

When they realised they were getting naff-all..., they went all pissy and moaned to my mom, who asked 'is there any reason you arent lending auntie Mo the grand she asked for towards a new car?'  And it cause so much hassle and tension.....Even now (13 years on,) there's an air of awkwardness with these leeching rellies, who i thankfully only see three or four times a year! (Not that I give a damn as they are twats anyway.)

Out of that amount, I would give a lot away to deserving causes, but would not advertise it to anyone.  I remember a tale a few years ago, about someone who actually won 8 million (I think,) and she didnt tell her own FAMILY, because she didnt want them affected or spoiled...she just made sure they were OK,. and informed them all at a much later date...  Letting everyone know this is a huge mistake IMO.

Congrats to both of them, they seem very grounded....not to mention ecstatically happy.

I posted the other day that I'd never go public but they were between a rock and a hard place.

I mean, how do you 'hide' 161 million!!!  You would never be able to enjoy it cos you'd be making up lies to justify the new house, new car, etc.  It has is drawbacks going public but they look like the kind of people who couldn't live with a life based on lies and are preparing to deal with the notoriety and all that goes with it.

I was gonna say...good luck to them....but they hardly need it do they.

Well you make a good point Aquarius... esp about the explaining everything...  but I guess I would say I won 10 million or something.... (like a few weeks after this....)  i wouldnt spend ANYthing for a few months anyway: I would wait for the dust to settle... then I would say I won 10 million or something....I  am pleased for them but still maintain that I would never go public with this amount.

Dead easy IMO. Many of us have contingency plans in place. Alas! Us cold calculating types never seem to win.

Falkirk was mentioned on R2. I was hoping it might be Gordon and Sarah Brown.

When did they move to Falkirk?  Aren't they still in South Queensferry (near the smelly water treatment plant)?      Anyway.. I'm not jealous now if they're from Largs... that's not so close as Falkirk.   I want to know why on earth they chose Falkirk for the press conference though.  Seems a weird location.

The trick would be to say you won 'some' money on the lottery, enough to give family a friends a few quid, but never reveal exactly how much you'd won. In the meantime you can do all your investing and stuff on the quiet. Everyone's a winner

As far as we are concerned anything between Glasgow and Edinburgh is the same place. It's the same mechanism that leeds people to call me a Geordie.

I've just had exactly that conversation with someone today (wonder how many people are doing that today)   You couldn't hide it, so do what you want to do without saying how much.   I'd sort out the family (and me), live off the interest, leave the ones I like a decent inheritance and leave the rest to charity (nah.. not giving it away while i'm alive... it's only £161 million... i might run out )

I'm glad you said that LOL.  I was thinking it, but didnt like to say.

They look like they enjoy life to the full already, good luck to them. Can't believe the bloke said he wouldn't get a new car straight away though as his old one was perfectly reliable!!

I can kind of understand why they went public......but they will never be able to hide from the begging letters and attention now. I don't think I could handle that.

I'm a bit disappointed with you. Who cares what these people are like? Would you have preferred a couple going to the the gym every night?

That's a bit cruel.  What's their weight got to do with the price of fish?

Aquarius

This will probably sound stupid but......I would go public then I'd give most of it away. That's too much money for one person/family. I'm a bit soppy so I'd sort myself and my family out first and give the rest to charity.
