Yes... but think of the effect of *them* on the Amish.
True but I'm sure they'd cope Reference:
And therein lies the biggest problem with the Amish and shows how they keep their community together - it's all about control.
I think it's less control as emotional blackmail. They let the children go off for however many years and then decide what they want to do. IMHO, they must want to stay with the more intresting life, but many of them will feel the parental pressure.Reference:
I believe that in each of the 4 programmes, they will be living with different groups of British teenagers.
thanks eugene
They so need to live somewhere like Holland Park: big city houses.

I'm not sure about that Cologne..... I would imagine it depends on what you want from life. I would think that for some the sense of community and belonging would be a bigger draw....
I wonder what sort of percentage 'opt out'

it can be - I'm surprised that Rumspringa for Gerry is taking so long as normally they only stay away for a year or two before returning. There are many that chose not to return to be baptised that regretted it later but because they have been shunned they are not allowed to return to the community. They then struggle with mainstream life and usually descend into drink and drugs It can also be the fear of what you don't know that makes them stay within their communities as well.

I don't think life on a S London estate would appeal to them at all
Ahh nice to see them having fun!

a quick google search says about 90% of them go back to the Amish life.
I can't see how they can call it a choice?
If you want to live out of the community it means you have no contact with your parents - or the rest of your family, ever again. Not because of locale but because you're banished!
If that's not emotional blackmail I don't know what is.

Hi Baz I agree, but just listening to the older boy talking about the things he will have to give up, I'm sure a lot of them struggle, especially if they've had their outside life for a while.Reference:

i agree baz - as i said earlier - i~ read a book where the detective was ex - Amish and she went to be a police chief by her ex- Amish community - they would have nothing to do with herReference:

they are not exactly showing them the 'best' of British life
That was interesting - Pengy, you obviously know a lot about it. From what I saw on Google they usually have to decide to go back or not by the time they're 21? Wasn't that guy older that?
Time to change threads...see you all in t'other one in a few minutes
Baz - off to the HL's thread now
What an interesting programme. I look forward to seeing the next one.
Ok... en masse move to the highlights thread?

No they're not. And yet, they talk of their idyllic life - so where's the UK version to compare?I'm thread hopping too. See you all in the HL
