I think that song may be the only one I've posted that I have in my record collection.

I tend to prefer their earlier stuff.  I liked that song at the time, but they definately got worse after that and got a bit preachy and pompous when they were trying to be U2.

I used to love that band till they decided they were 'soul' complete with a token female backing vocalist. Ugh, how the mighty fall.

I'm with you on that one.  Ultravox when they decided that they needed to get female backing, probably circa 1986 - when such things were obligatory, along with sax solos - was even more painfully tragic and unlistenable.

Not as big a mistake as taking on a moustachioed twat as lead vocalist who then proceeded to bore the world to death. Vienna anyone?

I liked that record!

Ultravox were always pretentious (I've no problem with musicians working their art school education into their lyrics) and IMO they got progressively duller with it as the 80s wore on, like quite a few bands of that era.  By the mid eighties they'd run out of ideas in earnest plodding, meandering synthesizer music which audiences had grown tired of.  Midge Ure had saved Africa and wanted to tell everyone about that rather than the usual pretentious twadle. Ultravox thought it would be a good idea to follow the mid 80s post-Live Aid trend of real instruments, cod soul backing singers, horn sections and sax solos.  IMO, the U-Vox album was dire in every conceivable way.

Shut up Rawky, the 80s didn't rock! , It was mostly rubbish, especially the middle bit with the big hair MTV soft rock.  I don't know if you're old enough (or too old) to remember that BBC2 show "No Limits", with Jenny Powell and some bloke going around the UK while playing really bad hair metal (as if there's a good type of hair metal)?  God, the music on that was awful!

That was the best it!

And no, i don't remember that show, i'm far too young for that. Mind you I was living in Portugal during the mid to late 80's so i wouldn't have known of it anyway.

Ah, you're just nostalgic for an era you never lived through!  If you'd lived through that period, you'd see those records in a different light.  All those records were overplayed on radio and TV and kept decent good old indie music off the playlists.  In an era where dross like Lady Gaga is held up as outrageous and dangerous and Simon Cowell acts dominate music sales, it's natural to hark back to the era of your parents and give it far more critical aclaim than it deserves.  In my opinion, of course!

So did I Carnelian. It saved my sanity during a bad period - "it means nothing to me" -
