This is the announcement from the BBC news site which has just been made.

Diane Abbott has gained enough nominations to get onto the Labour leadership ballot paper.

The backbencher managed to reach the threshold after fellow left-winger John McDonnell withdrew from the race.

Ms Abbott wil go up against four former cabinet ministers - Ed Balls, Andy Burnham and David and Ed Miliband.

Labour members and trade unionists and MPs will now be balloted and the result announced on 25 September.

I think it's a real shame thatJohn McDOnnell has withdrawn. I think he is relatively honorable, although I don't suppose he would have had a chance of being elected over the one of the Milibands or Ed Balls.  I just hope that the mega hypocritical Diane Abbot doesn't become Labour leader.  On second thoughts, that might be good, as it would ensure that the Labour Party wouldn't have a hope in hell of getting back into power in the forseable future

My humble opinion, for what it's worth:
Diane Abbott wouldn't inspire me with confidence. A bit lightweight and prone to surprising fluctuations and lack of long-term commitment.
Andy Burnham, possibly sometime in the future but not yet.
Ed Balls has an eye (if not 2 eyes) on the expedient opportunity. I don't trust him.
Of the two Miliband brothers I prefer David. Speaks with confidence and fluency.
But it won't be up to me.
