The way I heard it was that David refused to swear on his mother's or his father's life. He went on to say that his mother was dead and that he couldn't and wouldn't say it about his father. He cleverly sidestepped the question of the task by going on a verbal ramble about another matter. David seems ok atm. I quite like him, albeit that he talks too much.
