Quick typing and I talk lots as you can gather .

I have teenage children....

None of them have any friends or classmates that are pregnant.

After reading this post I started thinking....Kids nowadays know more about 'Sex' and precaussions are readily available and advertised, more than when I was young...........

I think it might be something to do with people not getting 'married' today....when I was young, Babies went hand in hand with marriage...of course people had Sex before marriage and lived together before marriage.

Perhaps young girls don't think 'marriage' is on the cards anymore so don't worry as much about getting pregnant....

Just a thought.....

TBH...and I may get shot down for this....its not the cleverer kids that genberally get pregnant...as has always been the case it's usually the thicker kids cos they look on it a their best/only career option.

I know what you are saying, I would'nt agree that it has anything to do with 'Mental apptitude' tho, I think 'some' children from more 'needy' families, where Education was'nt the most important thing at home, may look for affection and the easy way out of home maybe.

Women used to get Married and have children young in the past.

Oooh, controversial. Not sure it's neccesarily an intelligence thing, but by and large it is a cultural/class issue. It's a pretty sad state of affairs if young people think that that's all they can achieve in life. We need to show kids that they can expect to get more out of life by presenting them with better options.

Both my sisters-in-law had their first child at 19 Which isn't too bad.....they aren't very good Mums though

I had mine at 22 though which isn't THAT much older though And I am a great Mum

I remember chatting to you about this on the other side Darlo...I said then that kids need to be educated about the emotional side of relationships not just the physical. They also need to be encouraged to aspire to more than the council flat and benefit life that I see so many plump for. My mum was 18 when I was born and 19 when my sis was born...both her and my dad (still married 35yrs later btw) have always worked hard and given us the best they could. That's another part of the problem...they see it as an 'easy' option because the govt will pay for everything....the welfare and actual upbringing of the children is often left unconsidered. Children are incredibley rewarding, but they are also the hardest job you will ever have. It is sad that so many children think that having children will be 'easy' and 'fun'. Maybe teenagers should be taken to kids homes and have to care for some of these poor children (supervised, obviously) and see just how hard it really is....

I was a teenage mum

For me it was a case of doing too much too soon. Partying, looking older than I was which meant older guys hitting on me...me feeling all secsy and thinking this was great and then leading myself down the wrong path. Which, in turn, actually became the right path as when I got pregnant (at 17) I had to wise up, take a look at myself and prepare for motherhood. I'm not an amzing mother...I have my bad days when the kids get shouted at a little too much and I'm more than happy to give them to their granny for an hour but that's where it stops. I always miss them when they're gone for too long and as soon as they're in bed I'm replaying their whole day for their dad (who misses most of it due to work) and smiling at the things they did to drive me mad I know people who are older than me who are shocking parents so it doesn't all come down to age, it's how you handle it afterwards. (I'm 25 and have 2 kids btw)

I agree it's not age it's attitude that is the main problem. Like I said, my mum was a teenage mum and she had a great attitude to it, as did my dad.

I blame the secs.

Because in the UK a pregnancy test is required before an abortion is carried out. In many European countries a D&C is performed and no test is required. Hey presto! There was never a pregnancy.

In many European countries young mothers receive no state assistance so possibly abortion is a more realistic solution.

I'll give you that, the UK does have the highest rate right now. Parents need to try and speak to their children more, help them understand consequences also, at the same time Government has given people an easy ride for so long it's become a hard habit to break.

Yep, My Mum was 17 when she married my Dad (19) I myself had my first child at 19 (pregnant at 18) I'm now almost 43 with four of the bleeders.

Hate the word 'stigma' but that's what it was, if it became common knowledge that someone was pregnant and not married. Society/propriety/Church/Chapel just wouldn't see it as anything but a sin! At least some young girls now, do make fantastic Mothers. As for the comment earlier about their offspring not knowing anyone in this situation, my two didn't either,(they said) but I was shocked to learn they knew about other stuff, like how freely available it was to procure illegal substances, and most shockingly of all....firearms! These were all to be found in the so called 'upper class'. So to my mind it's not just teenage pregnancy that's out of control, it's the teenage generation and their perceptions of what is right and what is wrong. It begins in the home, and the education system in some cases, just couldn't care less! *breathes*

I wouldn't say being clever has a lot to do with it. Looking on getting pregnant as the best option is a lazy one not a thick one IMO. Lots of pampered kids get pregnant simply because they have no rules or guidance in their life. Lots of times those kids go for abortions and nobody ever knows. Mummy and daddy cover it up.

I'm not saying there aren't girls who see it as an easy option. I just feel that girls from say council estates who haven't got much then get pregnant are given a bad press.

The TV prog I mentioned suggested that there was a crisis of hegemony in these septic isles, a battle for hearts and minds if you will. In asking where do kids get their information from, it dealt with the misinformation gleaned from pornography and poor choice of role models and reading material.

We weren't even given much Sex Education lessons when we was at School .

Even now it's more about the biology rather than building relationships.

The binge drinking in this country plays a huge part in teenage pregnancies IMO and it's not just poor kids who binge drink

Why the school? No disrespect to you but your parents (or whoever raised you) is far more responsible for you and how you learn than the education system. IMO.

Did anyone actually pay attention in sex ed? I know I didn't but I sure as hell listened when my mum told me about it. I know some parents can't communicate too well with thier kids but in school it's just another class.....probably in one ear and out the other. Either that or it's creepy coz it's your teacher

I feel it's up to the parents to teach them things like that. It's a very personal subject and any parents who don't feel they could talk about sex maybe should have thought twice about having sex
