The attraction of council or housing association over private rent, is that it's a secure/assured tenancy - as long as you pay the rent, you never have to leave.

Private tenancies are not permanent and you rarely have more than one year contracts. Also, the rents are usually much cheaper, sometimes half as much as private rent.

In fact I'd probably vote for any party that started pointing the finger at the blokes instead of the women as the root of all society's evils....it would probably be more close to the truth and be such a flipping change Roll Eyes

Yeah, the waiting list is pretty grim here too.... single mums, expecting or with a baby go into B&B... and its grim.

In terms of reducing the number of young girls who think the only thing they can aspire to is to have their own place, through having a baby....

...perhaps there needs to be better ways of inspiring young people, opening their eyes to what is truly out there if they want it, and how to get it.

Reward... rather than punish.

I haven't really worded that very well.... its such a complex problem... with so many contributing factors, to just try to address it from one direction will push things out of sync somewhere else.

The assures tenancy is a very good point, I think shorthold leases are awful. I'd like to see some state encouragement to landlords to offer a good mix of both so that, say, families can put down roots and single professionals can get short term leases.

The cheap housing point is the one that riles me up. I have no chance of getting a council house, being a single, fully-able man and I have to pay market rates for housing. Why should people with kids, for example, get cheap housing if they're capable of paying market rates? I really resent the two-tier housing we have now.

If I was a dictator then I'd offer assured tenancies in state housing at market rates and short-term, means-tested state housing for people in trouble, with a defined route to moving into private housing when possible. There are 5 million people on state housing lists and I bet a fair chunk of them just want cheaper housing.

Only what I would expect from our friendly neighbourhood pet NAZIS!!

SEE, they LIKE 'camps' it sort of comes naturally to them,
and OF COURSE, their 'final solution' to any of the problems that society faces, HAS to involve punishment for someone somewhere,
here is a crazy idea, why not offer incentives to youngsters ( male and female ) DONT become parents untill they are over 21, married or single?
by wating that long there is more chance that one or both could be employed and already HAVE a place to live, and child would have more chance of a secure future,
the "rewards" would need to be substantial in order for there to be a real incentive though, how about a large cash lump sum, on the 21st birthday of all those who are childless? ( what would it cost the state to look after a single mum, or to keep her in a'camp' for years)?
course THAT would be both humane AND positive, but the British NAZI Party only do NASTY and negative, VILE BASTARDS.

Well in fairness men don't have this council flat option open to them. They have to stay at home with mum Laugh

I think the root of the problem should be tackled but, I can't help feeling that the ease of having a baby and getting what must seem like a fortune to a teenager in benefits is an attractive prospect to many young girls.

I was shocked after reading the opening post, don't know why because it something we should expect from the BNP.

What we, as a nation need to address, is why we have a generation of young people who think that either getting pregnant so as they will have something to love or going on "reality" programmes to give them 5 minutes of fame should be their only life choices.

We need to sort it out from the parents onwards, and give more praise and inducements for teenagers that are trying to make more of their lives, sometimes with a baby, not go back to the '40/50's and the "Unmarried mothers homes" which this proposal sounds scarily like it could be.

Who in all honesty would like to return to those days? We need to teach our sons/daughters to have respect for their bodies and that sex is something that you do in a loving relationship, not just because all your mates are doing it.

who would vote for this party, in this day and age, that worries me more than any amount of young mums.

I would say that not all teenagers feel as my second paragraph may imply, after reading through my post again, I certainly don't wish to imply that ALL teenagers are the same, it seems as if all we hear about are the one that are.

again, blaming it all on the women. If men/boys took responsibility
and stuck a bloody condom on more often, there wouldn't be the problem either.

Or, shock, horror, took more responsibility for their child when it was born instead of running back home to hide behind their mummy's petticoats.

There's a third option: safe, non-reproductive sex is something you can do for fun outside a loving relationship. That seems quite valid too.

I don't agree and that's the attitude that gets many kids switching off.

People like having sex whether in a loving relationship or not, I know I do, and did as a teenager Big Grin

That sort of puritanical attitude doesn't work.....we need to concentrate on measures to stop them getting pregnant, cos trying to stop people having sex just ain't going to happen in a million years Shake Head

Well obviously that is a valid point and one that I forgot to address in my post, but my view is that sex is part of a loving relationship and if I was lucky enough to have children, then I would be teaching them the options regarding contraception, but also telling them that sex is a way of two people showing their great love for each other.

I am sorry if my views sound old fashioned, but as I was at great pains to say, they are my views.

Apart from all the nonsense about short skirts and curfews, i don't see quite whats so wrong with the idea. It's not perfect but is the current system??

I agree. I too have known girls get pregnant and keep getting pregnant to not work and get a house etc..

Believe me I am no supporter of the BNP and the whole length of the skirt thing is beyond ridiculous but i do think something has to be done but to be honest I have no idea what.

Of course, it's also better when you're in that hot, lusty stage of a relationship which usually last 6 months or so. So, the way seems clear to me: fall in and out of love every six months and wear a nodder. Maximum pleasure all round and no financial burden on society! Ninja

Also in all 3 of the cases i have known first hand ( i know of others but they were not people i actually spoke at the time) they deliberately got pregnant to keep/ trap their current boyfriend, then promptly put their name down at the social. of course they're all moaning now about how hard life is, and how they are stuck in a miserable council estate.

The things they all had in common, was a lack of career direction, stooooopid boyfs who DID NOT want a baby and stooopid parents ( 2 were too strict 1 was ridiclously soft)

I really think schools and gvment should be targeting teenage boys about contraception as i think it is still subconciously seen as a girls responsibility.

I've been watching a series on iPlayer about pregnant young teenage girls around the ages of 14 - 17 years and the series follows them through their pregnancy and afterwards when they have had their babies. What I saw has been nothing like what we are told in the media about what happens. No automatic council house, no nothing in most cases! It was quite an eye-opener for me.

Most young girls who get pregnant with nowhere to go are put in foster care or hostles I dont think they recieve child benifts either.

well i've lived on a council estate all my life and got pregnant at 19 (single..no fault of my own, unless the BNP would have prefered me to marry an drug taking, womanising, violent twat) and was given a council house when baby was 7 months old and put on benefits.

none of it was my plan, i was at college at the time, didn't want kids, but found out i was pregnant (after the ex pierced condoms for 3 months) couldn't face abortion so gave up my college and acedemic future to be a mum. i didn't have the support to go to work or carry on with college.

i can tell them one thing being in a stinky undecorated house with no furniture and broken windows on my own with no help from noone and barely having money to live on (didn't have internet, tv or phone then either) was NOT attractive!!!!!!

why the hell should i have paid for my ex's manipulation??????? i paid enough back then...he didn't!!!

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i'm so bloody angry Angry Angry Angry

The ones shown in the series were either living at home with their parent/parents often in very cramped conditions and also in poverty in many cases, or they tried to set up home with their boyfriends in private rented accommodation and the conditions they were trying to live in with their new baby were absolute hell! And no, they don't get child benefits if they are under a certain age either. There were other benefits too that they were too young to qualify for. It seems the actual reality is completely different to what the media lets us believe in many cases.

I know! On paper I suppose I could be judged too... but I too have a story that sets me apart from the stereotype.... an awful lot do.

I DO know a couple of girls that are of the stereotype though... my bessie mates sister.... churns out another baby once the current baby has hit 4.... and makes no qualms about her reasons for it.

And another sadder case... of a girl who's aspirations were to get her own place... and pregnancy was her means to getting it.

But they are the ONLY two I know of. The rest are like you and I.... we have stories... and we are not the scrounging scum of the earth people would have us out to be.
