Techy help needed. IE 8

Thought I'd pick you clever FMs brains....

I currently have IE6 on my pc which I've been quite happy with until recently, when I keep getting told that certain sites are not going to work properly with that version.

So I probably have to upgrade to IE 8. Has anyone had any problems when they've upgraded to this? Should I do it?

I know there's many who would say get Firefox or that other one, but I'm asking about IE8 at the moment.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

I updated (from IE 6) to IE 7.
I didn`t like it and went back to IE 6.
More recently I updated to IE 8, and I have been fine with it.
You have to get used to the little differences and layout etc.. but it doesn`t take long to become familiar.
IE 8 has been ok for me.

Im in the same situation Jenny, using 6 and now being told it will be phased out on some sites I use. I've been happy with 6 but looks like from replies 8 will be ok, hope so lol

It crashes a lot more then IE7 ever did, especially on this site and playing games.

i upgraded and then uninstalled it cause i had nothing ut problems with it... it wouldn't let me load anything

I've heard that 7 was full of problems for many people, so I choose not to upgrade to that. I was hoping that they had ironed out any problems with IE8.

Well I have, all since the IE upgrade, Sometimes the reply box won't open and I have to use quick reply. Sometimes the page just won't re-load and I have to close the browser and relaunch.

That's if the Restore feature actually works for me. I've tried before to do that, and it told me there were no changes to restore, when I knew there were!

I've up graded to IE8...the only way it works properly for me is to run in in a 'skeleton' form...that means turn off all the extras that come with it. All the windows live accelerators, auto complete guff and crash recovery are turned off on mine as all they seem to do is eat CPU as a past time.

Run as a basic browser it seems fine...with all the extras it's crash city!

God. That doesn't sound too good.

I take it that these extras are easy enough to turn off? What's the point in them if they keep crashing?

Easiest thing to do if you're happy with IE6 or 7 is to download a second browser, I run IE7 and Moxilla firefox, I have 2 windows up one for work & one for playing.

Tools > Manage add ons > edit search providers and accelerators to what you want enable/disable.

Crash recovery = Tools > Internet options > Advanced > Untick enable automatic crash recovery.

Finally restart IE...it should work quicker.

They are easy to turn on and off Jenny...through the tools options.

I think sometimes they try to put to many 'gadgets' in these things and end up messing them up.

It was YouTube that said they were going to withdraw their support for my browser. I use that a lot, so I'm going to have to do something sooner or later.

I just want a basic browser that works for Google and forums...oh and I'm verrrry impatient so can't be doing with unnecessary extras. I like Firefox but some sites will only work properly in IE ....so have both!

Oh same here about YouTube

they recommended Google Chrome - which I know nothing about..and was it Firefox? and IE8 so thought I'd stick with IE as I'm used to the layout - well in 6 anyway

At some stage, like Pixie, I think I'll also get Firefox, but certainly haven't got the courage up to do that yet! And I'm not at all sure about Google Chrome.
