amount. Make up your mind you were just having a go at Margaret Thatcher for coming up with the scheme. Everyone could make up their own mind whether they wanted to take advantage of it.
Dont you see the point, it was SOCIAL housing there for people who could not afford to buy their own home, and then when they moved on it went to the next family. It was not there to be bought for a pittance and sell on at a profit

That is what I said squiggle, she started the policy, she rampt up the price of housing. She did not, however, provide cheap housing for those who couldn't afford it.

I think you'll find Argentina started that war!!!!
It's a little more complex than that. It has been suggested that our government gave the Argentine government junta bunch of fascists, the green light.  When Callaghan was in power and the Argentines were ready to invade he sent a show of force but Thatcher did not. An avoidable war perhaps.

Ironically, it led to the removal of some rather dodgy people from power.

With respect she did not ramp up the price of housing, the housing market is fairly unpredicable.  As a matter of fact I strongly disagreed with the sale of council houses but please don't blame her now for the fact that after years of Labour government hardly any first time buyers can afford to own their own property.

Laugh as you may Squiggle. There is nothing more embarrassing for us tribal Labour types than to see our party toadying to that lot in the hope of retaining a fragile short time in HMG.
I will laugh GJ because I saw how you 'Labour types' went totally mad yesterday when you thought you had a deal.  You even sacrificed your party leader to try to secure it.

oh I will have to read up on that, sounds like a good read. I would have loved to see them two going at it

I often wandered if the Queen made her stand or something when she had to go and see her weekly. Probably not though.  Just a quick word on the Falklands and I know everybody has a different oppinion on this, but Argentina didn't just invade, they were talking with the British Government and she wouldn'd give an inch. I remember Parkinson gabbling on about the necessity (sp) of defending British territory, but it could have been avoided.

New Labour will be remembered in the history books as the party who almost crippled the country with the worst national debt levels in living memory.

Tory and LD will be remembered as a progressive alliance who reform our politics, dragging it into the 21st century, while also dragging us out of debt, bringing stability and prosperity to us all.

ALL HAIL DAVID CAMERON !!

Because, even after 13yrs, Labour STILL haven't introduced a way to make it easier for first time buyers...all the houses that have been built and the vast majority have been for private buyers...not for rental/affordable housing...YES, Thatcher did bring in the right-to-buy...but Labour, in 13yrs have found no solution to the lack of council housing. They have been quick enough to sell off land for private developments...so why not build affordable/council/housing asosiation housing on some of this....or maybe the money involved was too tempting for the local councils...

And that's what we liked about her.  And incidentally speaking just for myself of course I liked the way she stood for no nonsense from the French and German premiers.  We need someone to stand up for our rights again in that way.

Who is going to bail us out if the proverbial is going to hit the fan. The IMF is who, then we'll all know how bad life can get. Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain are going to be protected by the Eurozone, to which we contribute, but will not benefit if we go down.

Can you imagine what it does to a party who reverses the right to buy? In this area I would say that Tavistock and Plymouth are going to join up in the next twenty years if the building of affordable housing carries on the way it does, but the core problem cannot be addressed because these places will be owned soon too and the problem will go round for ever unless somebody has the guts to go back to the old policy of a council house being just that.

I didn't say to reverse the right to buy...but why couldn't they fund the building of new homes for council/housing association houses?? We have had a lot of new housing estates built in out area over the last 10yrs...they are supposed to have had a percentage of the houses for housing association use...yet only one of the estates has done this (out of 6)...surely the govt should have insisted that they adhered to their promise?? Also..there are, as Clegg pointed out, 1000's of empty houses in this country...why couldn't they have used these for council housing?? There have been solutions to the lack of housing they have just chosen not to see them...
