Since the floods here in Cumbria, and the Town's road access bridges went, we can't get to the shops without very long detours. So for Tesco  we rely on deliveries, although I have heard they have opened a temporary store on our side of the lost bridge in a dis used factory building.  We might try going there for any last minute xmas Eve sell off bargains.

Luckily we weren't flooded  We still have alot of disruption to local services, people getting to and from work.  The teachers can't get to school at the start of the day and after school clubs are cancelled.  Getting to the shops or should I say not getting there is a bind. Clothes are a nightmare, I do shop online but it's hard getting the sizes right.

your expectations for pickled walnuts in truffle oil
I had no expectations before but they sound really nice and I want some now.

My local Tescos is only shut on Christmas Day.  It closes 6pm on Christmas Eve and opens again at 9am on Boxing Day.  How are people going to cope with the shops shut during that time?!  It's a nightmare!  They need to fill every possible cupboard with food!

Wonders how much of it will end up uneaten, in rubbish bags on the kerb before New Year.. It's obscene, really
I was just about to post the same thing, Toid (sorry to read about your op drama btw). When I was a kid the shops were shut for far longer and I don't remember all this fanatical food buying.  Makes me very cross - can't bear food being wasted.

You're so right about shops that used to shut much earlier before Christmas. Now it's an orgy of buy, buy, buy, right up to the last minute. Exactly how much do people really think they need, or can eat?
I think it's pretty sickening and wasteful, especially considering how many other people are facing Christmas with bugger all.

I feel sorry for the staff. They get moaned at for the shelves being empty, they get moaned at for the queues at the tills and they get moaned at for shutting for a day.
...and the Supermarkets are closed for such a short time, they hardly get any time off, and the time off they do get they are knackered due to working up to the last minute so the greedy Supermarkets can milk every last penny thye can

my online shop arrived fully intact, apart from my sprouts being substituted with mini jackets spuds

I do a online shop to last me 3-4 weeks as i can't get to the proper shops and it's easier for me to shop in bulk and more environmentally friendly to have one delivery a month, but it then coincides with all the mad Xmas shoppers doing a months shop at the same time but theirs is only for a week or a couple of days of stuffing their faces and then it ends up in the bin, as peeps have already said.. worra shame and a waste
