Homemade sloe gin in preparation
Sloe berrySloe gin is a red coloured liqueur flavoured with sloe berries, the fruit of the blackthorn, a relative of the plum. Sloe gin has an alcohol content between 15 to 30 percent by volume (30-60 proof).
The traditional way of making sloe gin is to infuse gin with the berries. Sugar is required to ensure that the sloe juices are extracted from the fruit. Almond flavoring may be added.
Many commercial sloe gins today are made by flavoring the less expensive neutral grain spirits and produce a fruit cordial effect although a number of long established reputable manufacturers still use the traditional method.
I love sloe gin, but haven't had it in years. I find it very sweet, but it might be because I always mixed it with lemonade rather than tonic.

I don't like it at all with lemonade, it makes it far too sweet. I always have Gordon's Sloe Gin and Schweppes full fat tonic, lots of ice and a slice of lemon, not lime. You should try it with the tonic, it's really refreshing.

I might do. I do like my gin and tonic, but my tastes have changed so much in the last couple of years and I crave sour stuff, like lime juice. Thus my choice of marguerita! I also crave salt, but I think that's more to do with not being able to have it.
