The Met Office forecast is fairly vague. As far as temperature is concerned they give 20% to cooler than average, 30% to average and 50% to above average. There's no mention of the odds for rainfall. For their details, such as they are, see http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/co...ssoffice/summer2009/

I don't know who it was, but I heard one forecaster yesterday saying he didn't understand how the Met Office could make such a forecast based on the available information. He thought that this summer would be similar to the last couple of years.

I think that their assertion that "A repeat of the wet summers of 2007 and 2008 is unlikely" is incorrect.

I should make it clear that the forecaster I was referring to was not a Met Office official, but some expert forecaster who was giving his views.

The Met Office has had to revise their summer forecast today. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/sc...nal/2009/summer.html

Oddly enough, they think the rainfall will be at or above average.

And Piers Corbyn's forecast on Radio 4 today for August was deluges and floods throughout the month with the worst in the West and North. The most pessimistic forecast I have ever heard.

the sun is awfully quiet... more rain methinks!

However, here's one for all you falsifiers out there... If it really is down to sunspots, then we should also see temperatures in line with those of the little ice age (or at least approaching them). I wonder why we aren't?
