Former Coronation Street actress Sophiya Haque, 41, dies of cancer

The stage and screen star, who played Rovers  Return assistant manager Poppy Morales from 2008-2009, passed away in the early  hours of Thursday morning.

Sophiya died in her sleep in a London  hospital, just a few weeks after she was diagnosed with cancer before  Christmas.

She had been suffering from pneumonia and had  developed a blood clot on her lungs.

Up until falling ill, she had been starring  in Michael Grandage's West End production Privates On Parade.

The director led the tributes: 'She was a  true force of nature and her glorious performance as Sylvia in Privates on  Parade is one that will be remembered with great joy.

'A spirited lady, she lived life to the full,  and her presence in the theatre will be sorely missed. The company would like to  dedicate the remaining performances to her memory.'

Also paying tributes were ITV and some of Sophiya's  former co-stars at Coronation Street.

An ITV statement read: 'We are saddened to  hear the terrible news of Sophiya's death.

'She was a vibrant and beautiful actress who  was a pleasure to have around  during her time on Coronation Street. Our  thoughts are with her family  and friends at this very sad time.'

Corrie star Antony Cotton (Sean Tully)  tweeted: 'Just on set and heard the  news about Sophiya Haque. So effing sad.  Night night kiddo x.'

Co-star Michael Le Vell also wrote on  Twitter: 'No way just heard about sophiya haque so sad. My heart goes out to the  family.'

Sophiya played Poppy in Corrie from December  2008 and June 2009.

Originally hired as the Rovers' 51st barmaid,  she was soon promoted to assistant manager.

Poppy irked locals when she fired Betty  Williams from her hotpot making, but later was fired herself by Steve  McDonald.

West End star Sophiya started her career as a  dancer in her hometown of Portsmouth, before moving to London.

She then spent time in a band and got a  record deal with Warner Brothers and was also a presenter for MTV Asia and  Channel V.

In 1997, she moved to India and starred in  many Bollywood films, before returning to the UK to star in Andrew  Lloyd Webber's Bombay Dreams in 2002 and West End production of The Far  Pavilions in 2005.

Very sad, but in all honesty haven't got a clue who she is or have any recollection of her character.

I heard the news this morning and I too had no idea who she was. Probably does not help that I don't watch soaps. Does seem terribly young to lose her life at 41.

Listening to Jeremy Vine and they were discussing schools closing due to a small amount of snow.  Firstly they had a very scary teacher man who basically told the Vine to shut it.  Then there was the most ridiculous woman ever.  Her argument went as follows.  Her daughter (6th form) due to do an exam today, after lunch, yesterday her teacher had said not matter what the school would be open for their exam.  Then this morning they got a phone call to say the school would be closed, so no exam.  Then they got a call just before lunch to say the school would be open for the exam.  Her complaint was that now her daughter had to go to school to do an exam she wasn't prepared for????   Surely if until this morning she thought she was doing the exam today she should have already been prepared.  

 

Sorry the stupid woman has just irked me, and I'm not even hormonal or anything 

Of course when I were a lad the dales kids would be up early, dig a few sheep, cars, and small planes out of the drifts before breakfast, then walk three miles to catch the bus to school. Folk have it easy nowadays.

I've just sent a really crappy e mail to our phone provider. Won't bore you with the details but ........it really, really gets me mad how the utility companies play really dirty when contracts are up for renewal. You find a much better deal elsewhere and suddenly after paying top notch (and being a good customer) they find that they can match the deal. Why didn't they do it in the first place!!!!!

 

I've cancelled after an irate phone call and been told that they'll be a fee of around £290 (we have four lines with them) - I've called their bluff

Aye that gets on my nerves too Soozy.  Jesus who are you with that they are trying to charge you £290?  

 

We've just changed ours at work to Select Telecom, we have 4 lines too and pay around (including calls) £50 a month.

That's what the cocky fecker told me I could expect to pay.

You wouldn't believe the amount of times I've told sky to cancel my account because they were trying to charge me ridiculous amounts of money for nothing.  Sky are also on my shit list because they refuse to change my account name from my maiden name to my married name unless I send them my marriage certificate 

Oh my God there's some amount of shite programmes on the telly for pre-teens these days.  Especially on Disney and Nickelodeon.  Kids who wear more make up than a drag queen and are always singing and dancing.  FML.

Thankfully my lad is past that stage now Ells, but I agree there was some real crap on those channels.

 

There was one (can't remember it's name) that starred the twin lads who played Ben in Friends, that was truly awful teen TV.

The Suite Life or something like that.

Most of the programmes are so far from normal life it's ridiculous.  They are all mega rich kids with great talents who live on boats and never have parents but are raised by the butler

Makes me laugh, whenever anyone criticizes her as a parent (and  some have) she goes nuts and says something like " talk about me all you want but leave my kids out of it, im a good mother"  uh huh

So she likes wedding cake  

My favourite was when she had a go at some pap photographer for taking a pic of Harvey when they were leaving hospital. She said something like "how does it feel to make money off a sick child" - I don't know Katie, how does it feel? You're the one that's been pimping him out to the highest bidding magazine since birth

I wonder if anyone else is interested in the Lower Saxony elections? Two of my chums are monitoring. It surely is only a matter of time before David McAllister becomes German President. Great news for our Scottish FMs. Not so great for those of us who have zero tolerance for Tories.
