Very nostalgic handling a document over 100 years old, Beautiful copper plate writing. Unfortunately it isn't in very good nick and therefore quite difficult to read. Lovely to have it all the same.

Soozy, you should be able to purchase a legible copy of the military records if you wish.  You could try www.nationalarchives.gov.uk  or there are websites you can view and download from but they may have a joining fee.

Ooh thank you for that ........TBH - he's the grandad I'm least interested in (isn't that awful) he was a black sheep - ran away and joined the marines aged 16 - I don't know any of his family so it's not like I'd be saying ..ooh that must be aunt so and so's daughter etc. etc.

The other three grand parents make for some cracking reading though. I haven't done much family history in a while - it all sort of ground to a halt but - I may get going again.

It's funny how some sections of the family catch your imagination more than others, huh?

I sure am, Cinds   How you getting on with it?

Struggling with some lines, others are amazing.

You'll get a breakthrough eventually.  Thought I'd hit a wall about a year ago with one 5xgt gt grandparent, then someone appeared with all the blurb.  It was all down to a very poor transcription mainly.

Mine is my Mothers Father, he was adopted by family in 1893, although I've managed to get his birth certificate, his parents are killing my tracking.

I know what you mean about bad transcription.  I found a relative that was on Ancestry as 'IVRATTAN' when I looked at the original document it was very obvious poor Ivrattan was actually written as Jonathan, but also described as an 'imbecile'?

I know I shouldn't but....  and it's exactly the type of thing I meant.

Lovejoy, born Clare Street, Drury Lane was transcribed by some bright spark as Lonegay, Clace Saint Dancy.  I mean, wtf..???

And as for the disability listings - brutal descriptions

And I've had some amazing names for some of the men in the family - can't remember at the moment but it makes it tricky to say the least

Trilby was a best selling book by George du Maurier (grandfather of Dapne) which was published in 1894. Trilby, the heroine, was working in Paris and was hypnotised by Svengali into becoming a talented singer.

It was made into a stage play and the lead actress wore a hat which became so popular that men started wearing it - hence the trilby hat.

It's been filmed as Svengali.

How sad

Coleen Rooney's teenage sister has died after a lifelong battle with Rett  syndrome.
Rett syndrome is a genetic neurological disorder that,  according to the NHS, affects one in 12,000 women. It causes physical and mental  disabilities that first develop in early childhood.

The BBC reports that a spokesman for the  family announced that 14-year-old Rosie McLoughlin, who  suffered from the disease from a young age, passed away at her home in Liverpool  last night.
In a statement Colleen, husband Wayne and Rosie's family said  they were "heartbroken", adding: "She was such a strong little girl and an  inspiration to us all.
"We shall cherish forever the memories we have  shared and the love she showed us each and every day of her life."
The  family also thanked staff at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital and Claire House  Children's Hospice in Wirral, Merseyside, where Rosie was treated, and asked for  privacy at a "sad and difficult time".
Coleen and Wayne have previously  raised money for the hospitals, as well as for sick and disadvantaged children.

A little bit off topic but I remember my grandad having lung cancer at the same time as Steve McQueen - we used to jolly him along telling him he was gonna beat it (even though he was terminal). When Mc Queen died I remember him saying so sadly 'well if he can't be saved with all his money what chance do I have?'

Awwwwwww  My grandad was the lovliest person I have ever known.

I know what you mean, I really do.  But I did say an audible 'oh no' when I read that she had died.

I have friends who had a daughter who was 45 when she died but had been dependent all of her life due to mental age and then in later life developed another condition where her bones started calcifying so she couldn't move and she ended up being tube fed.  All I can think of was her mother saying to me at her funeral, "what am I going to do now".  Breaks my heart, she'd spent every day of that girls life looking after her, and when she was gone she just didn't know what to do with her self.

Cinds

I actually came in to this thread to say about Boy Cinds growing his wisdom teefs.  He's been in pain, so I have given him paracetemol, which dulled it for a while, then I had a revelation.  I ground some cloves in my coffee grinder and mixed them in a little olive oil, got him to rub some of the mixture on his gums.

He firstly moaned about the disgustingness of it, then 2 mins later was "oh my god it's worked, I can't feel a thing"
