Human urine has been used to charge a mobile phone in a major breakthrough for researchers.

Just half a litre of waste generated enough power to make a six-minute phone call and to send several text messages.

If the technology can be developed further, it might have grander implications for providing electricity to remote communities in the developing world.

Researcher Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos said: ‘Using the ultimate waste product as a source of power to produce electricity is about as eco as it gets. One product that we can be sure of an unending supply is our own urine.’

The technology relies on passing urine through fuel cells made of microbes. As they feed off the urine, they produce electricity – in this case, enough to charge the battery of a basic Samsung phone.

Dr Ieropoulos and his team, from the University of the West of England, said it was the first time urine had been used directly to power a commercially available battery.

However, Prof Will Stewart, of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, told Metro there were already other renewable means of powering electronic devices which were very practical to use in developing countries.

He added: ‘A solar panel the size of a paperback book will charge a phone within two or three hours.’

This beautiful weather is not good for us. We keep taking the afternoon off and ending up in a beer garden.

It lasted less than 5 minutes, but was one of those lovely warm summer showers.  It's back to 29 degrees again now though.

Joe I popped to the Metrocentre for some shoes and I swear to god it was just as hot indoors, the air con wasn't doing a thing.

I am signed in to photobucket,would that be it/if so how do I do it .

open the folder where your pics are on your lappy and then add one at a time and then click to upload  - once they are showing in photo bucket copy the pic and paste it into a post here 

if I have told you wrong or they have changed the uploading procedure then I apoligise - it is ages since I used mine

Just had a call to tell me there's a taxi wedged up against my training room! Thankfully it sounds like the driver's OK, but he went through metal railings and the cab fell into the basement where my room is - they got him out , but his cab is stuck fast . Away from home just now and waiting for an update from the landlord , but it's looking like I might be out of commission for some time - folk are checking for structural damage upstairs and they can't assess the damage to my place till they get heavy lifting gear to get the taxi out
