I love that A friend went to a funeral recently of a young lad of 25. Apparently there were 300 ish people there, but no one sang any of the hymns. She couldn't understand why

We sang the 24th Psalm - Abide With Me and Amazing Grace (along with Judy Collins minus the bagpipes or any accompianment) - we had to listen to the first verse to get the tine/pace then join in. It was beautiful (there were a lot of choir singers in the congregation).

Apparently it was her wish and her husband was really choked up at the result.

I went to a funeral a couple of weeks ago (didn't actually know the deceased but was in support of a friend) there were only about a dozen there - I think I was one of the few to sing but I did my best

I love singing hymns - I know all the words to most - we sang hymns every day at school and hymn practice once a week - you never forget do you?

No you don't ... and I love them too.

I'm the one belting them out without having to look at the book!

Me too - but every now and then you get a word wrong (or more to the point the books wrong) that can be a tad embarrasing.

I always sing too. I was a choirboy and we used to sing twice on a Sunday and practice/rehearsal on a Friday. Psalms were the biggest challenge as the choirmaster used to pop in different tunes. That's probably where I got my sense of timing and phrasing. A few years ago I attended a German wedding and was surprised that some of the hymns were the same as ours, but in German of course.

We used to sing 'Father Hear the Prayer we Offer ' to the tune of the German National Anthem.

Mr Woo was a choirboy at Sowerby Church (or Thirsk I'm not too sure) - I bet you knew him as a boy.

Yay what wonderful news. I'm not nosy but ... what's the ring like, when are you getting married, church, registry office or other? What sort of dress are you thinking (and the shoes, of course).

Told you I'm not nosy ... and I agree with yogi, this should be a thread of it's own
