Sugar Ray Leonard Says Strictly Come Dancing's Joe Calzaghe Could Be A Winner
STRICTLY Come Dancing contestant Joe Calzaghe was given words of encouragement by a fellow boxing legend today.
Sugar Ray Leonard urged the Welshman to "hang in there" following a series of poor performances with his partner Kristina Rihanoff on the prime time BBC1 show.
The former four-weight champion from Maryland, USA, is widely considered to be one of the all-time greats of the sport and was famed for his lightening fast hands inside the ring and his eloquence outside it.
He was speaking following a business meeting in Pontllanfraith, South Wales, about the possibility of marketing a high-tech punching bag called the Calzaghe Counter-Punch in his homeland.
The training aid was developed in partnership with Joe and his close friend and amateur boxing coach Kevin Davies.
Joe was unable to meet Sugar Ray today due to filming commitments on Strictly Come Dancing but the pair spoke on the phone this afternoon.
Calzaghe's father and former trainer, Enzo, instead deputised for him.
"He (Joe Calzaghe) couldn't make it because his feet are hurting," laughed Sugar Ray. "He says dancing is much harder than boxing."
When he asked the gathering of reporters and photographers how Calzaghe was doing on the show, there was silence before an eruption of laughter.
Sugar Ray then said: "I have asked the same question all over but nothing is coming out of their mouths!"
He also revealed he once considered taking part in the American version of the show, called Dancing with the Stars, but declined after his children told him they would be too embarrassed.
He added: "Hang in there (Joe) and move your feet."

Youâve probably heard of Dionne Bromfield, the 13-year-old god-daughter of Amy Winehouse, but have you heard her sing?
Bromfield performed on the BBCâs Strictly Come Dancing Saturday with Winehouse as one of her backup singers. She sang, âMama Saidâ, the debut single from her new album, Introducing Dionne Bromfield. The young singer has been signed to Winehouseâs record label, Lioness.
Bromfield was thrilled to be invited on the show. She said, âAmy and I both love Strictly Come Dancing. I watch it every single Saturday, so it was brilliant to find out Iâll be on TV for the first time singing on one of my favourite shows.â
Looking at her and listening to her it is hard to believe she is only 13. Sheâs very good, and doesnât oversing it. Nice, simple and clean. Adorable.

Bee Gees to perform on Strictly | |
The surviving members of the Bee Gees have been lined up to perform on a future episode of Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC has confirmed. It will be their first TV performance since Maurice Gibb died during emergency surgery in 2003. Best known for hits such as Night Fever and Staying Alive, brothers Robin and Barry will appear on 31 October. After Maurice's death, the brothers said they would no longer use the Bee Gees name. Further acts But in 2008, Robin told the BBC News website they would perform again "when the time is right". Last month, they confirmed that they were working together again. "The two of us are getting back together again as we speak," Robin - who was Maurice's twin - revealed on BBC Radio's Test Match Special. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb were one of the biggest acts of the 1970s and won multiple Grammy awards during their career. The band's hits spanned five decades and included Massachusetts, Night Fever, Tragedy, How Deep is Your Love and You Win Again. A spokeswoman for Strictly Come Dancing confirmed the Gibb brothers would be performing on Halloween. She added that more acts had been lined up for future shows, but refused to disclose any names. Despite attracting the likes of Beyonce last year, the BBC show has so far failed to book guests to rival ITV's The X Factor, which will see Whitney Houston take to the stage this weekend. |
Strictly Come Dancing stars waltz into town

Kristina Rihanoff and Brian Fortuna put the dance class through their paces
Strictly Come Dancing waltzed into the borough this week when two of its stars held a dance class at the Wandsworth Palais nightclub.
Twinkle-toed dancers Kristina Rihanoff and Brian Fortuna showed their fun side at the class held last Sunday evening.
The duo, who are paired with boxer Joe Calzaghe and The Billâs Ali Bastian respectively, impressed the crowd of willing woman and largely reluctant men.
Almost 60 people turned for the event which cost ÂĢ40 per ticket, some travelling from as far as Manchester.
An onlooker said: âAt one point stunning Kristina even did the splits to show off her amazing legs.â
Tongues have been wagging over Brian and his actress partner Ali, who have been snapped in the tabloids canoodling in between rehearsals.
Brian said: âWe usually perform in front of thousands of people on television plus the studio audience, but I like the intimacy here.â

I so can't wait to see Chris Hollins and Ola Jordan do the Jive. Wish it would hurry up for Saturday
When the time comes I wonder if they could just let Chris go and keep Ola in?
Roll on Saturday.

I'm not that bothered about Ola for some reason, she's very pretty though, talented pro very good dancer but personality wise doesn't do it for me for some strange reason but nice girl maybe shy, Kristina however has bags of charisma and is so bubbly, pretty and is a brill dancer always get excited when I see her.

BBC defends Strictly Come Dancing's Ali Bastian dance lessons
AAAH. News that isn't really news. Perfect for a Friday.
Strictly Come Dancing's gorgeous Ali Bastian has had dance lessons before going on the BBC reality show, screams The Sun.
Really? After a handful of near faultless performances already, what on earth might have given twinkle-toed former Hollyoaks hottie away?
Still, the Beeb says that's fine - even though it's put other green-eyed contestants' noses out of joint.
A BBC spokeswoman told The Mirror: "It's not an unfair advantage - there are no rules against people who may have had a bit of training in the past."
So it's not cheating. It's planning.
That's their fault if they haven't.
As long as they aren't professional dancers, can't see the problem.
I learnt to ballroom dance while young and to ice skate.
Alesha Dixon Spills The Beans On Strictly Come Dancing Row
ALESHA Dixon says she was as surprised as everyone else when Arlene Phillips was axed from Strictly Come Dancing - yet she has had to take "all the flak."
The singer tells Jonathan Ross tonight that she thought they would both be judges on the BBC1 show.
She said the backlash against her has made her stronger and dismissed suggestions that Arlene's departure was due to ageism as "rubbish."
Alesha tells Ross: "I knew nothing, I found out when everyone else did. I was as surprised as everyone else but I took all the flak for it."
The singer disputed suggestions that Arlene, aged 66, was a casualty of ageism - claims that have also been rejected by the BBC.
She said: "Personally I don't think it's about ageism, I think that's a load of rubbish."
The 31-year-old, who won the contest in 2007, said that while worried that the other judges would not warm to her, she has come out fighting after coming under intense media scrutiny.
"I thought I'm not going to let the media ruin my experience.
"It's made me stronger. My life has never been smooth; it's made me more determined, focused ... I'm a fighter, I believe you have to rise above negativity."
On show contestants having affairs, Dixon said: "It gets flirtatious, it doesn't surprise me."
Alesha's interview can be seen tonight on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross at 10.35pm on BBC1.Friday 16 October 2009 at 12:07
Strictly Come Dancing enters its fifth week and the elimination market continues to spark lots of interest.
Craig And Flavia Look A Good Bet To Leave This Week
Coronation Streetâs Craig Kelly can be backed at 7/4 with Ladbrokes to be the next celebrity eliminated in Strictly Come Dancing.Craig and his partner Flavia Cacace have already been involved two dance-offs and look to be living on borrowed time in the competition and this could be the week that Craig leaves the show unless he gets the better of his nerves.
Are Brendanâs Fans Saving Jo Wood?
Next in the betting is model Jo Wood who is dancing with Strictly Come Dancing bad boy, Brendan Cole. Despite always finishing near the bottom of the judgeâs leader board, the public have voted in large enough numbers so far to keep her out of the dance-off. It could well be that the same thing will happen this week but if you think Jo will go Bet365 are offering the best price for her to be eliminated at 11/4.Calzaghe Benefits From Home Support
Former World Boxing Champion Joe Calzaghe has really struggled to convert his skills to the dance floor but, as with Jo Wood, he has yet to face the judges in a dance-off. Joe has a big fan base, especially in his native Wales, and he may be around for another few weeks.Calzaghe is a best priced 5/1 with Blue Square to leave the competition this week.
An Outsider Worth A Punt?
Of the other competitors, perhaps Chris Hollins (16/1 to be eliminated with Boylesports) and Jade Johnson could have most to fear this week. Chris and Jade have both acquitted themselves well on the dance floor but neither would be likely to match the public vote of Jo Wood or Joe Calzaghe.Jade Johnson in particular seems to be struggling to make an impression when surrounded by all the celebrity personalities and could be worth a speculative punt at 33/1 with Stan James or Skybet.

Go Alesha, she's not letting them get her down always full of positivity and smiling.
I've missed a couple of ITT so only know what a couple of the celebs are doing.
I think it's Wednesday nights when the lovely Karen Hardy is on with Choreography Corner and discusses the choreography of the previous week's dances. She is really good in discussing all the moves and how it is clever when the pros use them.
I think Jo Wood is appallingly bad. (and why does she behave like a 4-year-old?)
Throughout the series for me Ali and Brian have outshone everyone else.
I like Jo Wood, was actually glad she and Brendan got through *runs*.
I like the way you can hold on to your own opinions in spite of disputes going on around you. You can also disagree without being unpleasant or rude. (One of the nice things about the majority of posters on here.)
So don't run - your views are too valuable.
And Dancing with the stars in on tonight as well, that's pretty good to watch.
