Strictly Come Dancing, Alesha being a judge, BBC One
Publication date: 22 September 2009

The complaint
We've received some complaints from viewers who feel Alesha is a poor choice of judge for Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC's response
We're delighted with Alesha's debut performance as part of the judging panel on Strictly Come Dancing and that so many millions tuned in to enjoy the show.
Having won the contest in 2007 Alesha understands exactly what it takes to excel as a dancer as well as knowing just what the celebrity contestants are going through in the competition. Her knowledge and direct experience add a different perspective to the panel which complements the whole judging line up.

They were obviously going to defend her and good on them, no choice really.

Don't always watch SCD, but wanted to come on this thread and say I'm sick of people slagging off Alesha   She only won the show, has been in a girl band and is a successful solo artist and she's a talented dancer also What people don't seem to realise is there's voicing your opinion and there's going to far, she is a real person with real feelings, everyone should just lay off her and stop their jealous ranting!!

STRICTLY Come Dancing: It’s the row the media are itching to call Arlene-gate and many viewers are calling dull – will Alesha Dixon find her own way to hold a card with a number from 1 to 10 written on?

S&M Come Dancing

Daily Mirror (front page): “STRICCTLY GAGGED- Exclusive: Clamp over Arlene”

And now appearing in the fetish Gimp dance, motor-mouthed point scorer extraordinaire Arlene Philipsâ€Ķ.

Arlene Phillips Is Dead

“Strictly-ites, who happily scoffed as Arlene stumbled clumsily over her painfully scripted flights of alliteration, suddenly insist they miss her more fervently than their deceased relatives.” - Vanessa Feltz

Arm Done

So no comment on Arlene Phillips, as the BBC directive commands. And as Alesha Dixon tells theRadio Times, the BBC’s TV schedules organ:

“Maybe people wanted to start a catfight. But I didn’t see it as an argument between Arlene and me. We were just caught in the middle. I haven’t even spoken to her about it. Why would I? Was I wounded by some of the comments? Sure. Some of them were very stereotypical and judgmental.”

Arms off the table when you’re talking, Alesha. Arms. Arms. Arms.

“When I read that I only won in 2007 because I was half-naked, I did take that seriously. That’s not someone offering a considered opinion, that’s someone being a bitch.”

For sure: a considered opinion on a reality-TV show dance contest that isn’t a real contest is dull; bitchiness is entertaining.

Wattle. Wattle. Bingo Wings!

ARLENE PHILLIPS acted with dignity when she spoke out in support of ALESHA DIXON - the half-her-age singer who replaced her as a judge on Strictly Come Dancing.

But here’s betting that in the privacy of her own home she danced naked through her living room while shouting ‘whoop whoop’ and punching the air - Martel Maxwell, The Sun

They Shoot Horses

The Sun (front page): “Dance show stretched to 2hrs 15 minutes - Strictlt bum-numbing”

Strictly - hosted by Bruce Forsyth - will run from 7pm to 9.15pm to feature dances by 14 couples in its third-round show. The X Factor starts at 8pm and finishes at the same time.

Last man still watching wins.

Alesha Dixon The Metaphor

YESTERDAY London traders were not downbeat at the prospect of a Lib Dem mansion tax on their docklands pads. No, the assumption that the party will ever get to power in any real sense is an oxymoron but talk of a so-called Tobin tax could be more vexing. Nobel prize-winning economist James Tobin first proposed a tax on currency trading as far back as 1972. The idea, like Alesha Dixon on Strictly Come Dancing, was received with mixed reviews and it was not until the dying decade of last century that a think-tank proffered the suggestion that such a tax could apply to all financial transactions - Tim Jenkins, Western Mail

Fact

What would Alesha have done if her pop career hadn’t worked out? Well, she’d have probably been a PE teacher. “I was really good at sports and pretty bossy - the perfect combination. I even did a diploma in sports studies,” she admits. - DS

The Criticism Writes Itself

How I longed to hear her brisk verdict on Kristina Rihanoff and the human wardrobe that is Joe Calzaghe. Joe is a gorgeous bloke and a great boxer, but he is to dancing what David Miliband is to romantic comedy. Kristina, the Siberian siren, was doing everything she could to loosen Joe up, short of making him a father on the spot. Alas, it was still like moving bits of heavy machinery. Alesha’s verdict on the couple was: ‘You was smelling her hair. It looked like you were smelling her hair at one point.’

Pitiful. I felt embarrassed for her.

Briefed by her BBC minders, Alesha dismisses the criticism against her as ‘a storm in a teacup’. Some teacup. She’s going to be in hot water for a while yet Allison Pearson

Alesha Dixon Is this Year’s John Sergeant

There’s some bloke off EastEnders; a muscle-bound behemoth from Crimewatch, the Oxo Mum, a couple of soap actresses, some sporting has-beens, andâ€Ķ oh, I can’t be bothered to go on. There’s no John Sergeant to care about, no Cherie Lunghi to root for, no Austin Healey to lust after. Where are the personalities? Where is the glamour? The sex appeal? Where is the talent – even if it’s the talent to fail magnificently? - Liz Hunt, Telegraph

Where is the talentâ€Ķeh?

Justin Lee Collins: Bruce Forsyth should quit Strictly

Justin Lee Collins has waded into the ageism row hanging overStrictly Come Dancing by suggesting that Bruce Forsyth is too old to carry on, and should have “given up three or four years ago”.

Lee Collins, who presented Strictly Come Dancing: On Three in 2004, said: “I still think Bruce in his day was the best at what he did, but I think he should have given up three or four years ago.”

Having worked with the 81-year-old through the Strictly spin-off show which aired on BBC 3, the fellow presenter admitted his experiences with Forsyth had not been comfortable.

He told the BBC’s own website: “As legendary as he is - I grew up loving him, as did my parents, as did my grandparents - he wasn't particularly nice to me on that show.

"I loved him and they do say never meet your idols because you're always going to be disappointed and in the case of Bruce I was disappointed. He was very rude."

Lee Collins also explained that many people were "frightened" to say anything bad about Brucie because he was a broadcasting "legend".

"It would be like saying something rude about the Queen, you just don't do it,” he added. "But he does a very, very difficult show on TV, and I think particularly on that first series, he may have found it difficult.”

The 34-year-old presenter said that he would like to see Sir Terry Wogan take over as the main presenter.

But a few hundred complaining is nothing to the millions of people who loved having her as a judge with didn't write in or phone to say so.
It's only those that complain that get heard.
The silent majority should be taken into consideration as well.
Which was probably about millions.

Strictly Come Dancing contestants told not to criticise Alesha

strictlylogo

One of the Strictly Come Dancing contestants has claimed that the BBC has banned them from criticising Alesha Dixon’s performance on the show.

The celebrity, who wished to remain anonymous, reportedly showed a briefing document to The Mirror. The document is said to give them answers to press questions about the Alesha/Arlene debacle.

One said: “It was made clear we can’t say what we really think. There is a culture of fear. It’s as if they are trying to brainwash us. It would be funny if so many of us weren’t worried about accidentally saying something inappropriate.”

In response to questions about Arlene’s departure, celebrities are instructed to say: “Arlene’s a good friend and I’m happy she will continue to be part of the Strictly family in her role on The One Show. I’m also looking forward to having Alesha join the series.”

When asked if the show is ageist they must reply: “Age or gender has absolutely nothing to do with the decision to replace Arlene. The age ranges of presenters, judges and contestants show this would not have played a part.”

However, the BBC said: “It is standard practice to give people who will be in interview situations guidance on any questions that may arise but it is ludicrous to suggest this amounts to the BBC banning or gagging anyone.”

Hickey, actually forgive my error, the papers today are saying the over 4million+ I reapeat 4 million odd complaints have worked their way to the BBC. Not to mention all the forums flooded with complaints that the girl is not up to the job
You like Alesha as a judge, I don't. Both different opinions but both valid wouldn't you say. Thank God we have forums which gives us both the opportunity to put our point accross.

Arlene Phillips Carrying On With "Day Job" Amid Strictly Come Dancing Row

By Marion McMullen on Sep 23, 09 12:49 PM

6146782-1.jpg
FORMER Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips insisted today that she had not been affected by the row over her departure from the show.

The BBC faced accusations of ageism after she was axed from the hit celebrity dance contest to make way for the much younger Alesha Dixon.

Arlene, aged 66, who is directing a new dance musical at London's O2 venue, said she had carried on with her "day job" in the theatre throughout the controversy.

"I have always had a full-time job," she said.

"My day job has always been in theatre - always, for years now.

"I have done two or three shows a year for the last goodness knows how many years."

Asked how she was coping personally with the controversy surrounding Strictly, Arlene said: "Every day I get up and I live my life just as I have done before, during and after."

She aid she would continue TV work with The One Show, where she is the Strictly reporter, alongside her theatre projects.

Alesha Dixon, aged 30, has come under fire for her performance on the judging panel, with some viewers claiming she was too soft on some of the contestants, but Arlene Phillips refused to be drawn on her replacement.

Phillips was speaking at the launch of Sacred Flame, a new dance musical she is directing starring Marti Pellow from Wet Wet Wet.

The BBC strongly rejected suggestions that a leaked briefing note reportedly sent to dancers, judges and celebrities appearing in the new series amounted to a "gagging order."

The document, in question and answer format, gave advice on how to handle awkward questions about Phillips's departure from Strictly.

A BBC spokeswoman said: "It is standard practice to give people who will be in interview situations guidance on any questions that may arise, but it is absolutely ludicrous to suggest that this amounts to the BBC banning or gagging anyone from saying anything."

BBC sources said the briefing was an internal document intended to help the Strictly press team.

They should back off and leave her alone, every movement Alesha makes now the press will be commenting on it and stirring it up even more which is a plus for those on the backlash. But what they should consider is that if they complain doesn't mean everyone else agrees, wow a complaints in a the thousands doesn't represent the millions that watch and maybe some people can't be bothered to moan over a TV show and see it as fun but there is a right to express your opinion and complain so those people are using it but it's this kind of drama every series started by the BBC then people on the backlash that is making the series a mockery imo as some are going way OTT.

Kristina ends night with Joe

KRISTINA Rihanoff and Joe Calzaghe continued to fuel rumours they are more than just dance partners - by ending her birthday night together.

The Strictly Come Dancing pair left the Russian dancer's 32nd birthday celebrations in a taxi and headed back to a private address in west London.

Birthday bash ... Kristina and Joe

While brightly-dressed Kristina seemed sober as she left Whisky Mist club, her boxer partner looked a bit worse for wear - suggesting that rehearsals won't go too smoothly today.

Before hitting the nightclub, Joe, 37, had turned up for a meal at Babylon restaurant at Kensington Roof Gardens with Kristina.

The two have been spotted cosying up to each other several times in recent weeks.

Yesterday Joe was snapped tenderly stroking her cheek, while she in return gave him a kiss.

But they are not the only Strictly pairing acting like a couple at the moment.

The Bill star Ali Bastian also seems to be getting close to her partner, Brian Fortuna.

The pair attended Kristina's birthday bash and ending their night leaving together.

TBH, I'm getting tired of the series of SCD being all about Alesha.  She will stay on the panel or not, and although I don't think she is qualified to judge, I don't watch the programme for the judges anyway.

I was a bit disappointed in ITT yesterday as I felt they had too many guests on and none of them really had much time to speak.  They are probably trying to fit everyone into this first week in case someone has to leave.  Also, they didn't need to show so much of Jade's feet injuries !

I am also Suzi even as a fan of hers but as long as people keep on complaining, the press stirring it all up and jumping on the bandwagon and the BBC getting all this publicity then i'm afraid it will continue till the end. John Sargeant last year was an example although he gave in to the pressure but also some people rang his housephone and spoke to his wife ranting about the whole saga, he said a couple of days after he stood down how pathetic over a TV show?. I hope that Alesha isn't gettting any abuse in the street, but as you know some people are like that.
darloboy (Play The Game!)
Well, Darlo, I am of the society that believes JS outstayed his welcome.  I found him endearing in his waltz, incredibly funny in his paso, but he became quite tedious after that.  No one should be put through that type of abuse - especially over a television programme.  I think it's a sad reflection on society that people can become that abusive over a difference of opinion.

There's really no right or wrong about Alesha being a judge, not really.  The viewers always have the option of switching off.  I really don't care who the judges are, as long as they judge based on their expertise.

Do you ever listen to the professional commentary when the dances are danced?  I didn't notice if they had that this year, but I liked listening to the experts explain the different moves.
FM
Whatever people thought of JS he got the public vote and deserved to stay on that merit he wasn't the best dancer he was quite bad but he tried his best. According to the figures that were released to the papers after he quit he got 1.7 million votes the week Lisa and Cherie ended up in the dance off way ahead of everyone else so would have possibly won if he stayed but as he said winning would have been a joke too far.  Cherie had the lowest votes according to them also so maybe her fans should have voted more to save her?.

I did watch a bit off it the year Alesha was in and a couple last year on the red button but after that couldn't be bothred, might try it again soon for Ricky Whittle and Laila.

BBC bosses were risking another backlash from viewers last night - after making Strictly Come Dancing more than TWO HOURS long.

The Beeb has already come under fire after moving the show's start time to clash directly with ITV1's big hit The X Factor on Saturday nights.

Strictly - hosted by Bruce Forsyth - will run from 7pm to 9.15pm to feature dances by 14 couples in its third-round show. The X Factor starts at 8pm and finishes at the same time.

The marathon Strictly show on October 3 is one of at least two 2ž-hour editions planned.

And a spokesman said last night: "Strictly's start time will vary slightly according to the length of the show - which changes from week to week."

Clash ... Simon Cowell

Clash ... Simon Cowell

Producers have already been criticised for replacing judge Arlene Phillips, 66, with former show winner Alesha Dixon, 30.

And the latest move will anger licence-fee payers - who blasted Beeb bosses after the clash was first revealed.

One fan said: "The BBC needs to stop being so petty."

The X Factor boss Simon Cowell - writing in The Sun last Saturday - also urged the BBC to resolve the row.

But last night programming chief Jana Bennett insisted the channel will NOT budge.

She said it had to have "the best line-up on a Saturday", which meant "keeping Strictly at the heart of the schedule". Her words came despite BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons telling the channel not to fight ITV for viewers but focus "on the quality of programmes".

He also pointed out that last Saturday's The X Factor had two million more viewers than Strictly. He said: "Viewers were asked to make a choice. It did not go in favour of the BBC."

But he is unlikely to meddle with the scheduling. A spokeswoman said: "Scheduling individual programmes is a matter for the executive not the trust."

BBC insiders last night insisted The X Factor should change its slot. They said shows such as the National Lottery and Match of the Day made it impossible to move Strictly.

Hicky
I think the judges take the show a bit serious.
I'm sure that 95% of the viewers watching would never have noticed most of the things pointed out by the judges.
In other words it isn't really going to influence our votes.
I just look at how the dance is flowing with the 2 dancers, you would think that the judges were judging the world finals instead of a few people that have never danced like this in their lives, and have just started.

Just wanted to comment.. Why would the BBC. try and fix something which wasn't broken???
If you look at from a different angle, if they didn't change anything what would they have to print in the papers etc.

It's just a publicity stunt, looke how many people are commenting, and how many column inches it's creating.

It's working isn't it.
Free Publicity.

I think you've hit the spot  Hicky. There's no such thing as bad publicity is there? No one seems to be even slightly interested that a former world tennis superstar has been kicked out, quite unfairly imho, in the first week.
Once the Arlene/Alisha nonsense sinks into the sunset the search will be on for the next John Sargeant. Any candidates?

As I said, I'm tired of the Alesha/Arlene saga. The judges have never and will never be the "stars of the show".

Hear, hear!   OK, I think she's a waste of space as a judge, but it would never stop me (or, I believe any true fans of the show) from watching.   I also couldn't give two hoots about Arlene.    Unless Alesha suddenly starts saying exactly what I think, I'll just continue to glaze over while she's telling everyone how 'fierce' they are and listen to the technical comments from those who are qualified.

While I'm on a rant.... I'm also fed up reading about the 'ratings war'    In this age of V+ and Sky+ surely it's a complete nonsense to say any programme 'wins'?

Strictly Come Dancing: this weeks group dance is a Michael Jackson tribute

strictlylogo

This week’s Strictly Come Dancing group dance will be a tribute to the late, great Michael Jackson.

Brian Fortuna, professional partner of Ali Bastian, let slip to The Sun: “The Michael Jackson tribute is all funk and hip hop. It’s so exciting.”

Last weeks solo dancers will be performing this weeks group routine. Here’s hoping they do Jacko justice!

i like Alesha but I can see also see why people are moaning about her as a judge

OK, she cant comment on the dancing as professionally as Arlene, of course, but saying that - the judges all cant agree anyway - if there were rules for dancing and contestants dont stick to them - ALL the judges should agree - surely ??

Having Alesha is giving a different perspective on the judging, after all, she has been through it all

having said that ... all i can say is   COME ON RICKY WHITTLE  CWORRRRRRRRRRRRR
FM
Well I think the judging has been far too critical for the first week.

They have only just learnt the steps they aren't dancers for heavens sake, with they would chill out.

A bit of help would be ok, but the things they say is rediculous.
I think Alesha is doing fine, at least they have someone that understands what it is like out on the floor from the beginning.
The other 3 are in a fantasy world, they think that they are judging proffessional dancers for a world title, for gods sake ease off, it's just an entertainment program.

I thought the majority of the scoring was a bit high for the first week. Giving out 7's and 8's right away doesn't give the dancers much to aim for.
I suppose they just wanted to make a point in showing the difference between the dancers.
Those at the top/bottom.
But the judges didn't really give the same marks, but they are looking at different aspects of the dancing.
Not sure what Alesha was looking at but I think she is just giving the dancers support, whereas the other judges are pulling their work to pieces which makes it very difficult for the proffessionals.

I think the first few weeks the dancers are more concerned about remembering the steps, not worrying about their mouth/finger position.

Ricky blew me away!  Even though he looked like a fish out of water with that mouth!  I was really surprised as I didn't expect that from him at all.  I was expecting Gary Hobbs!

I think they will show the rehearsals footage tonight - I hope they have someone good commenting on it.

Richard Dunwoody teaches Strictly Come Dancing partner Lilia to ride

Richard Dunwoody takes Strictly Come Dancing partner Lilia Kopylova horse riding

Abigail Butcher, H&H news editor

24 September, 2009

Richard Dunwoody turned the tables on his Strictly Come Dancing partner Lilia Kopylova this week, by taking her riding.

The former three-times champion jockey is one of 16 celebrities learning to dance on the popular BBC One series.

On Tuesday Richard took Lilia for a canter on the turf at Wimbledon Village Stables. And the professional Russian dancer took to riding like a natural.

"Her balance was good, she was getting the rising trot and really loving it," said Liz Ampairee, Richard Dunwoody's spokesman.

"She wants to learn to ride — and would have been cantering if the BBC let her!"

As well as teaching Lilia to ride, Richard had to gallop his chestnut horse for the cameras — for a show to be broadcast this weekend.

"He's practising every hour of the day," said Liz. "He's found it very hard — but Richard being Richard he's put everything into it."

The 45-year-old former jockey will perform the waltz on Friday's Strictly Come Dancing and the cha cha cha on Saturday.

In an interview with Racing Post TV, he said: "With horseracing, there's no absolutely correct way — you can't say that Tony McCoy is doing it right, or Ruby Walsh is doing it right. Whereas with dancing, you have to get it absolutely right — and it's tough."

He admitted to waking up in the night and going through his steps. And despite his dedication, Richard is still a rank outsider with the bookies.

"The racing and the horse industry must vote for him on Strictly Come Dancing," added Liz. "He really is getting better."
