I was looking at some Iris in a stream tonight as I waited for the 88 bus.

I tried growing them but although there was lots of foliage, I got no flowers.

These were just in a stream, I don't think there is any owner or management of this stream. Maybe you need to treat them like they are self sufficient.

I've got three flag irises in a front bed ...yellow ones .....but the heads are so heavy they soon flop over

Can you put in canes to support them?

I probably tended them too much

I would if they were in the back garden ....but the bed is very near the main path ....and we aren't allowed to out up fences ....so I doubt any canes would stay there for long

In biology, altricial species are those in which the young are incapable of moving around on their own soon after hatching or being born.

In biology, precocial species are those in which the young are relatively mature and mobile from the moment of birth or hatching.

I'm going to remember this as it could be a quiz question one day.

I'll probably have forgotten it by the end of the programme.

My memory is pants nowadays.

I'm just going to remember 'precocial'. I will consider it 'precocious' outgoing, getting along from the get go. Then it's easier to remember the other.
