Why do they? Ryan Giggs has achieved more in his career than all of those put together and at 36 is still performing at the top level of both domestic and european football.
They have made achievments as individuals, Giggs hasnt won all those things alone... he contributed to them but there were 10 other players on that pitch with him.

It's "Sports Personality of the Year", though. What matters is what each individual has achieved over 2009 - not over a whole career.

Footballers always have a difficult time in this competition, not just because fans of rival teams are often loath to vote for them, but also because as members of a team, it's dificult to get individual recognition.

The thing is though, what people have achieved this year, they've been working for over past years. So really it is kind of down to their whole career so far. Giggsy won a League title and a Carling cup this year and was also a European cup finalist.

I take your point though. He should definitely get some sort of recognition for his achievements though because there's not many players like him.

So Jenson Button's car and his team around him that make his car better than his competitors don't deserve any credit do they?

Did Jonny Wilkinson not deserve it when he won it because he was part of a team? Did Flintoff not deserve it either because he was part of a team?

Button did the driving, Wilko made that final kick which won the world cup, it was probably the biggest moment of the year... I say the same for Flintoff as Giggs, he shouldnt of won...
