Radio news on the way home said he was standing down as MP too. A by-election! Excellent, I bet Gordon is really looking forward to that.
Does anyone know how many MP's have actually broken the rules and done anything illegal?

Awww. I reckon she'd do a good job. She'd take no nonsense anyway. I remember when she did an Agony Aunt column for a little while in, I think, the Guardian. It was great. Mostly, it was "pull yourself together" and stuff like that.
I think she'd do a great job too - she really is a 'no nonsense' person and doesn't suffer fools gladly.

Anne Widdecombe has just denied that she will be putting herself forward for speaker.
Cue loads of toadying MPs outside the commons sliming on about how wonderful the speaker was.
She may sit as interim Speaker.

And what's more, above all, she is transparently HONEST!
He had to go...his arrogance got in the way in the end

There are a couple who have allegedly claimed for stuff they've not actually had to pay out for ... Elliot Morley for example.
Whether any actual prosecutions will follow is another matter.

I think the Inland Revenue are looking into it as well. So, even if the Fees Office accepted the claims and there technically no rules there were broken, there might be a back tax liability. I think it may be possible that tax laws may have been broken.

She 'brokered' the expenses structure that has led to these current problems !!!
What a sorry mess this whole affair is. They all seem as culpable as each other.
The turn out for the European elections will surely suffer as a result of this.

I have read this Morning that a psychiatrist has been placed on standby to counsel MPs 'stressed' by the expenses scandal!!!!
"The therapist funded by the taxpayer is said to have been put on call as some politicians are supposedly close to breakdown after the details of their expenses were revealed!!!"

I'll bet they're stressed. You have to wonder how they will survive on their 'meagre' salaries now they can't top them up with extravagant expense claims. Poor loves.

Exactly! I'd say it's more to do with how they're going to continue funding the lifestyles they've been living now they've been caught....I reckon many of them will be in the crap now as I'm sure they're living beyond their means now their expenses have been chopped!!! I haven't on ounce of sympathy for any of them!!!!
Did anyone see Gordon Brown on GMTV this Morning? When asked about Hazel Blears, he said she has apologised and paid the ÂĢ13k back....well that's ok then.....maybe I'll steal ÂĢ13k and IF i get caught, then i'll just pay it back, and keep my job!

There is something about her that I've never quite liked - even before this scandal broke. I remember watching her on question time, or newsnight and feeling annoyed with her.
I think Jeremy Paxman does a great job keeping his cool with them. I bet he'd love to give them a piece of his mind. Why on earth can't they just answer a question? I'd vote for someone who could actually say, 'yes' or 'no' without talking about something entirely different to the original topic. grrrrrr

They know they have limited time when they're being interviewed, therefore I have noticed that all of them waste time by repeating the question asked, grrrrrrr.......
Brown dodged the question of whether she will be 'sacked' many times....and yes, there is something odd about her....she always looks startled!! Does she ever blink? Lol! Her eyes look like they've been painted on....

YES! That's it. Martin was described as a 'dead speaker walking' in yesterdays papers and I guess it would be fair to describe Brown in a similar way.
I do feel kind of sorry for Gordon Brown, but to be fair their party have had the reigns for long enough and it's time for someone else to have a go.

I completely agree Towno...they've had enough time to turn things around now and have made a mess of it...
....i also hate it when, as Gordon Brown did this Morning, Andrew Castle asked him a question and he started saying something along the lines of "we have done this, blah blah, the Torys brought this rule in when they were in powere", basically trying to shift the blame, scoring political points all the time.....instead of just saying they were wrong....
The trouble is Towno, I suspect Labour will get in again near me, there are lots of people who get too many benefits for nothing to vote them out....
...I want to know what 'they' are going to do for me...single female, no kids, in full-time employment on an average salary (just above minimum wage)..I pay for everything, prescriptions, private dental care, the lot...I can't afford to get on the property ladder etc...nothing I guess!!!!
I have nothing about people getting benefits if they are genuine BUT, the whole system stinks IMO, I know people who have never worked and have a better lifestyle than I do....

You have my sympathies, that's for sure. I work and am a single mother so I do qualify for some benefits (working tax credits). However, I know of someone living near me who actually comes out withe more disposable income than I do and she doens't work! On top of that she gets her free prescriptions, full housing benefit, council tax relief - the lot.
It's rotten to think that you go out earning and if you take into account the extras that you pay for working you can be better off claiming. Crazy system.
Take heart though, at least we are contributing and have the pride when someone asks us what we do for a living that we can tell them we work.
Could you imagine not working? Well I could LOL but I'm a lazy bitch some days.
I also know what you mean about Labour getting in again. I'm from the north east and it's notoriously red up here. Most folk only vote Labour because that's what their dad did, and their dad before them. Change is certainly coming at the next general election though.

What means notoriously red?
We are proudly heritage Labour around these parts. Here's hoping we may reorganise, kick out the Thatcherite suits (props. T. Blair and G. Brown) and take power again one day.

It is also the values my parents brought me if with, if you don't work, you don't get....sadly, it seems to be the other way round now, though as you say, at least I have my pride!

I laughed out loud when I saw this charity advert.
I've far more sympathy for those losing their homes and jobs than any of that money grabbing lot
This man was an absolute disgrace and why it took so long to get rid of him is beyond me.

Not about the speaker, but get this:
"In an astonishing outburst Mr Steen, who spent ÂĢ90,000 on his second home, including big sums for lopping trees in its grounds, said that his critics were jealous because he lived in a large house. He blamed the Freedom of Information Act for his plight and asked what right the public had to interfere with his private life.
âIâve done nothing criminal, thatâs the most awful thing, and do you know what itâs about? Jealousy,â he told the BBC. âIâve got a very, very large house. Some people say it looks like Balmoral. Itâs a merchantâs house of the 19th century. Itâs not particularly attractive, it just does me nicely.â
Mr Steen later apologised after being threatened by David Cameron with removal from the party. "

Excellent news in fact
Perhaps the good people of Salford have been able to see straight through this comparably faux crisis, and are already asking questions about what lies behind it.
1. Why is not in the public interest for us to know the dynamics behind the news gathering?
2. What happened to the breaking news of tax avoidance.
3. Are the two related? (Yes they are! )

A true endorsement of politics: voter turnout a whacking 17.5%
The triumphant Labour candidate was feted with an incredible 606 votes .
The BNP came a close 3rd with 276
Indeed BDO! My point exactly. The fight back begins here.

LOL at that picture - she's scary alright.
I saw the article today in the Metro paper about thatAnthnoy Steen and his 19th Century 'Balmoral' home. He's claimed ÂĢ87,000 in four years. It's outrageous.

I was absolutely seething with rage when I heard this yesterday!!
So, the public are jealous are we?
No matey, go and live in the real world and try and see life through a normal person's eyes!!
I, for one, am certainly not jealous of anyone or what they have in life - good luck to them as they've normally worked damned hard for what they've achieved BUT, the likes of Mr Steen who is nothing but a parasite living high on the hog off the backs of us mere taxpayers, makes me incandescent with rage!!!
